I'm trying to determine the best way to install stuff like speakers in the cabin, a holder for a boat hook beneath the gunwale, a shelf in the forward berth, etc.
Is there a best way to do this?
I hesitate to be drilling a bunch of holes so should I use some kind of epoxy adhesive?
Thanks |

For the things you are talking about, it can all be done without drilling a hole through the hull. The speakers can be mounted on/under the electronics shelf. Or, and this is a general technique, "glue" a piece of marine grade plywood or teak where you want to mount something using one of the 3M adhesives and then screw items into the wood (of course use screws that are short than the depth of the wood). 3M 3200 is a good silicone and can be failrly easily removed in the future. 4200 is stronger and 5200 is damn near permanent.
Edited to correct the error noted below (e.g. without previously read with). _________________ Roger on Meant to be

I think he meant without drilling a hole through the hull which is very negative for most of us....

I understand what ya'all are saying about not drilling holes.... but not bad....heck ya gotta drill some to mount some things.... holes are easy to patch...the boats are made of polyester resin, which patches really well, and a dab of paint will cover any mistakes...it won't hurt the boat a bit...besides it's your boat...make it the way you want... |

I mount most all my stuff inside the cabin with 5200. Haven't had anything in the 22 or the 25 fall on my head yet. However there is still tomorrow. _________________ David and Kate

And David, just think about it. Since you work with Pat Anderson all the time, even if it did fall on your head, either wouldn't hurt or wouldn't do any damage!!

So, when you all are smearing adhesives to the inside of the hull (guess I should say applying adhesives) do you rough up or sand the surface to get that paint out of the way? |

My theory for mounting things on the boat is to try and use existing holes and screws. A lesson I learned from the factory by the way they route and attach the wiring. So far I have been able to mount a fire extinguisher, speakers and other holders by utilizing the window frame screws. I think it not only looks cool but keeps the spirit of the boat. If the brackets don't match up I modify them. Good luck, Gary on Minnie Swann _________________ Gary & Gerrie former Minnie Swann owners

I usually rough it up a little with some 150 grit. Although a couple of times I didn't and the stuff is still in place. |

When ever I glue a bracket or a mounting board to the hull or wall I cut small grooves in the peaice that I am glueing so that the glue has a little more to hold on too. Gives a better surface then just a flat piece of wood or metal. So far the 5200 has really done a great job holding my speakers in place. _________________ Thomas J Elliott
