|
|
I am looking at fastening a 4-rod fishing rod rack to the ceiling of my 2008 22 cruiser, high top. If the high top is cored I would use screws which would penetrate about 5/8 inch into the top, but I'm not interested in drilling a test hole which would pop outside if the top is not cored!
Anyone have experience with drilling this model year top? Is there variation (cored or not cored) from year to year from different builders? Thanks! Doug _________________ Darkwater Doug

The top of my 07 CD22 is not cored. It is maybe 1/2 thick solid FG. It is easy to go all the way through if you are not careful. The PO of my boat had rod holders in the ceiling. These were mounted with bolts drilled through and 5200'd in place. I took the rod holders out, but the bolts are still there. I thought about taking the bolts out, but they are really in there. I'd probably make a mess of the roof getting them out, so I decided to leave them in place. |

I bolted my 6 rod holder on to my 03 22 cruiser. I don't remember drilling out any wood but I mounted directly above the cabin door on the angle before the roof becomes flat. I'm not sure if the top is cored or not but imo there isn't enough material to secure screws to for a permanent mount. I put cap nuts on the end of the bolts that are in the cabin and I don't feel it looks bad. |

An alternative to drilling there would be to use a wood piece, and fix it there with some 4200 FastSet, Braced or propped there until it is cured, then drill, tap or screw into that for your rod holder. No possible pointy things sticking through the roof, and no possible leaks. Just a thought.
This method has been tried, used and worked in many situations.

I mounted my radar antenna directly to the roof, but can't remember if there was any wood in there. I think it was just fiberglass, and not all that thick. Colby |

To the best of my recollection: The very top of the 22, (raised part) is not cored, the lip over the windshield is not cored.
But the side, where the hand rails, and outward is--are cored. The Tom Cat is the opposite. This is for 2006 boats. I would strongly suspect that the hit top is not cored.
Since this fiberglass is fairly thin, you will be far better off, gluing a piece of wood to the inside, and screwing into that. I like either epoxy, or 5200 (I have used both). Hold it in place until it sets up with a dab of hot glue on each end. _________________ Bob Austin

My 2006 w/ raised roof was NOT cored. I installed a radar pedestal and made the holes myself. _________________ Jeff

You could use an offset bracket attached using the bolts that hold on the top rails, I did something simular on my 25 you can see it in my album under man cave. Aluminum flat stock would work nicely it's easy to work with, and a little imagination. _________________ Jay

This is what I experienced on our 2005 CD Cruiser. The outer area at the back end of the roof was definitely cored as I needed to drill holes on both sides for the radar arch. _________________ Peter & Caryn
