I have a 1995 Honda 4 cycle on my 22 C-Dory that has about 600 hours on the motor. Sometimes when I raise the motor up high enough to put the locks down, the motor will not go down when you press the down button. Then you have to go to the release presure screw to get the motor back down and if the boat is in the water that screw is hard to get to as it is underwater. I sure would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this problem. Thank you!

I had that problem with a Johnson once. Turns out the electrical connection to the switch was loose. If it doesn't make a sound when you hit the down button then my guess would be a loose or corroded switch. If you can get to the connections to the switch and clean/tighten them that might fix it. If not maybe the switch is going bad.

I agree to check the electrical connections first then if needed, test the relays and switches

Look at it this way. If the hydraulics boosts the motor up and you don't see any fluid, the hydraulics is OK (are OK?)

Referring to the manual for a 2005 150 ( a cheap, handy thing to have for any outboard) it shows that there are two and only two wires to the !@#$ DC pump motor. Thus, the motor is driven in one direction to raise the motor and the DC voltage is reversed to drive the motor in the reverse direction to lower the motor.

Since the motor works in the up direction, you have checked that power is getting through to the motor, and a good bet is that the up/down switch in the throttle is bad. I leave the rest to you.

There are 3 wires going to the tilt switch and check the wire on the down side. It may be bad or disconnected

Why would you put the "locks down" if the boat is in the water? I agree that it's an electrical problem. Probably contacts with that many hours on it. Maybe even in the tilt trim switch at the throttle and not in the motor.

Does the tilt motor run when you push the down button?

The trim potentiometer (tilt switch?) has 3 wires going to it. There is ground and positive to provide the voltage reference across a resistor, with the third wire connected to the pot wiper. This gives the position of the trim indicator arm and is only used for the trim indicator.

The tilt hydraulic motor only has 2 wires and is independent of the trim indicator. The throttle switch has relays which reverse the voltage to the motor. The Lewmar windlass is wired the same.

Its probably the relay . BTW The lock is only there to work on the trim motor assembly . It is a common misconception that its for trailering . Its not .A piece of wood or PVC like this Yamaha part is a better way to travel.

Marc;
I do a lot of trailering of my 22' Angler. What would you recommend as a motor support for my Honda 90 that may be readily available in Canada? Would a piece of solid oak suffice?
Thanks!

Personally, I'd use something a little "softer" like pine. Cheaper, easier to replace and will provide a little "cushion" Oak doesn't give much.

We have a 05-06? f-115 that would not go down with tilt switch .the boat was in the water so I filled up the reservoir best I could in the water and then used release screw on side . The motor came down and we then put engine up and down to bleed the air out and it seems ok . I replaced the 2 trim shock cylinders bushings or rubber gaskets last year but I think it's the center tilt shock that could be leaking so I'm wondering if this can be rebuilt also ? I've gotten conflicting reports depending on year and motor HP??
