I bought a radio adapter fitting that allows you to put your backup handheld VHF (Icom, SH or Uniden, plus others?) on your boats 8' 6db aerial in the event of an electrical or main radio failure. Probably should more than double the handhelds effective range in an emergency situation (though I don’t know how to personally test this).
The fitting is SMA (male) to PL259 (F)
[not all that easy to find but I've seen them all as one]
Alternative is to buy 2 adapters [readily avail] and put them together
BNC (F) to SMA (M) and BNC (M) to PL259 (F)
Parts are often avail on ebay and well under $20,
Keep the fitting taped near the end of your aerial wire and hope it never needs to be used.

99 cent note pad... nickle #2 pencil.... and a note to myself to turn off the buttons and gizmos that drain my batteries....that cost a bit more than $20.
Now...where did I put that pad and pencil???

I have several free small carbiner type clips from meetings and used them to hold box end wrench together. A larger one would be better.
I just replaced the antenna and used a centerpin connector for quick install
$8

Piece cut from a 3” PVC union, 99 cents. Allows us to run the Wallas on low at cruise, no more puking exhaust back into the cabin. Hot stick glued as a temporary experiment early this season, still there.

I use a 3 ft section of foam pipe insulation to slide over my 8 ft fiberglass VHF antenna when I lay it back for trailering. It then keeps the antenna from bouncing on the cabin roof, and also extends past the top end, to provide visibility and eye protection. A short line wrapped once and then tied to the boarding handle ensures that it is still in place when I am ready to raise the antenna.
See the foam just above the open door and boarding handle in the photo at this link:

Dave
I use one on Journey On when camping on land. One end goes into the sink drain and the other end allows one to attach a hose and catch the stuff coming through the sink in a jug.

You win 50% of an Attaboy Boris !
The other is for the macerator thru hull. SHE doesn't like holding the hose, and doesn't understand the complexity of one valve and a switch ! |
