Yamaha Engine Data To Raymarine C and E Series Units

I just got done connecting the Command Link output of my Yamaha 150 to the Sea Talk (NMEA 2000) input of my Raymarine C-80. It was surprisely easy on the electronics side. The hardest part was running the cable from the motor to the C-80. The Yamaha Command Link and RayMarine C-80 are both NMEA 2000 compliant although they use proprietary conectors between the NMEA 2000 network and the devices. When you think proprietary think $$. The Yamaha cable was $100. Having done the job, I think I could do it now for half of what I spent and make it a lot easier to do at the same time.

The net result of this is I can now see coolant temp, oil pressure, rpm, fuel flow, and alternator output/battery voltage on a custom page on the C-80. Also all engine alarms are sounded on the C-80. My choice was either doing this to get fuel flow or buying a Yamaha Command Link gauge(s) or a Lowrance LMF-400 all of which required a similar amount and expense for cables. The C-80 option was the least expensive at $300 although having done it, I think I could do it for $150.

Tom, i'm doing the same project with a Suzuki, but i have yet to start. I got the NMEA 2000 wiring, 2 fuel flow gages and a 4 in. Multi-Function Gauge from a guy on TheHulltruth. I had to buy the NEMA 2000 to SeaTalk conversion cable (which was the biggest hassel) as Raymarine does not seem to want to support this layout.

Quick question? They told me I need the Multi-Function Gauge to setup the initial configuration with the Engine module so that the E80 would understand the fuel tank size and some other settings and trim tab functions. Is all you did is plug engine module into the network and the E80? Did you/can you do any configurations of the engine module from the E80?

Thanks Jim

Jim,

At this point it is read only. I haven't worked on the fuel remaining since my existing gauge already does that. I was only interested in fuel flow and engine operating parameters.

The C-80 recognized the NMEA 2000 messages coming from the Yamaha and displayed them as soon as I set up the screen and turned on the key.
