Barry, I would leave the C-Dory for several hours up to most of some days, but no overnight camping. On the outer coast of Chichagof Island & some areas of Baranof, many of the locals won't even walk on shore due to the large number of bears. I wouldn't set up a tent & spend the night at Red Bluff Bay without an electric fence set up & even then I think it would make for a nervous night & I've spent many nights in bear country by myself, many without even a tent.
The bear I backed off from acted & looked like a even younger bear I saw there in 2010. It bluff charged a fisherman & I had a very close encounter with it too that year. It was the most aggressive this year of all the bears I saw in Red Bluff Bay with me & around the other bears too except for the big male & he wasn't aggressive with me.
For the most part during late spring they are constantly eating sedge grass. Then its the salmon berries & sedge grass & finaly when the fish run its mainly fish. I think a occational deer & other bears along with many other plant varities & bugs round out the diet.
