trim tabs

What is the concensus regarding the installation of trim tabs? Should we or are they not that important? Which ones are best if we decide to go ahead?

We will be cruising out of Port Townsend, WA around Puget Sound, the San Juans and north.

Try reading some of the threads under the forum:

Trim Tabs and Hydrofoils

We like 'em both, but there are a lot of considerations, and it also depends on which C-Dory you're considering using them on.

Read on! And ask when you have questions!

Good Luck!

Hi. You might want to check this link for our recent experience with trim tabs:

http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t=12294

The important things I learned:

1. Have the boat weight-balanced from side to side as well as possible (passenger, fuel, water, etc.)

2. Use the power trim on the motor for fore and aft trimming... it's much safer and more effective.

3. Use the trim tabs VERY sparingly to fine tune the balance from side to side. For this use they appear to be very helpful.

4. Don't routinely put the trim tabs down all the way... though your boat might plane better, you sacrifice control of the boat because everything is sitting up so high off the water. Skidding is a bad feeling and unsafe at speed.

Hope this helps. Just in the last week, I've changed the way I use them and now find them helpful for balance as in #3. Sometimes you just can't get the weight inside the boat just right.

Enjoy,

Thanks Kathleen! When you spoke of using the motor; did you mean that your motor has a hydrofoil?

Thanks!

Yes, it does. And it works great for getting on plane and balancing fore/aft once you're there.

We have trim tabs (Bennett) and Permatrims. We cruised for two years with trim tabs alone and two with both. With trim tabs alone we used them for fore and aft trim plus lateral trim. They worked fine but we noticed a bit of lugging when we had them way down to get the bow down. It took a little experience to figure out how to be delicate and get the most good from them. With permatrims too we use the trim tabs just for lateral trim and they are great. The Permatrims give us good fore and aft trim and there is adequate range to allow us to move the bow in a wide variety of water conditions. There too, if we over trim, we notice some very minor lugging and lower fuel economy. Together they make a very nice combination and with a little experience, make traveling much smoother. If I had to choose one, I'd go with the trim tabs and I would definitely go with the auto retract feature so they come up when the engines are shut down.
