Tow Vehicle for 25 cruiser

Hi everybody,
We are looking to purchase a 25 cruiser and I have some concerns towing. On the C-Dory website, it says the average weight is 4800 lbs. which includes the boat, motor, trailer and fuel. The owner we are talking is very knowledgable about his boat and all the systems, but he says the boat alone weights 6000 lbs plus the trailer of 2000 lbs for a total of 9000lbs. This seems very high, but the owner knows the boat inside and out.

I was originally thinking a 2007+ Toyota Tacoma could tow it(with a towing capacity of 6500 lbs), but now I'm looking at a 2007+ Tundra which barely can pull it with a towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. Not to mention having to rework the hitch to have a class V for the added tongue weight.

Can somebody out there give me some input on what their 25 cruiser weighs and what truck they use to tow? I most concerned about safety and second the wear and tear on the tow vehicle.

Thank you,
Tom

Hi Tom,

The 4800 pounds on the brochure (and web site) was empty hull weight without engine, rigging, batteries, fuel, water, electronics, or gear. Just the hull as it came out the door at the end of the production line.

We delivered quite a few C-Dory 25s when we were a dealer for them. Almost all of them tipped the scale between 8,000 and 8,500 pounds in terms of full-up towing weight. That's not to say you couldn't keep one lighter and that there aren't exceptions, but exceptions they are.

Just the empty hull with full water and full fuel is about 5,600 pounds (and with a trailer about 7,600 pounds). Then you have to add the engine, rigging, boat accessories, and gear. That's usually at least 1,000 pounds.

A new Tundra will tow it. I think most folks are happiest with a 3/4 ton (or 1 ton) truck or SUV type vehicle with a long wheelbase and a larger engine.

Hope this helps,

Les
