The built in search at the C-Brats definitely has limitations, and I alternate between it and Google depending on what I'm looking for.
Here's a much more efficient way to search the C-Brats using Google, with one caveat...you must be running Firefox. Of course...why would you use anything else?
The procedure:
1. Add a new bookmark, and name it something descriptive.
2. Cut/paste the following into the Location field
3. Add a short string you'll remember into the Keyword field of the bookmark - it can be anything you like, but keep it short. I use cb
4. You should have something similar to the following - save the bookmark.

Now...all you need to do to search the C-Brats, is type the following in your Firefox address bar (where you would normally type in a web address), and press enter:
cb SearchString
And bam! - instant Google results, showing relevant hits at the C-Brats.
SearchString is anything you wish to search on. cb is the keyword defined in the bookmark above - if you chose something else, substitute your keyword for "cb".
All the normal Google search rules apply to your search string. If you enter several words, Google does it's best to find relevant results that contain all the words. If you enclose all or part of your search string in quotes, Google searches for an exact phrase based on the quoted portion.
Some examples:
cb scotty penn --> Finds topics discussing both downriggers
cb "single or twins" --> The age-old debate
cb "inside passage" bears --> Critters along the way north
