Site Format Changes

After receiving another comment on the "crowded" site layout today, I decided to spend some time in the shoes of folks with lower monitor resolutions. I set my video to 800x600, the lowest resolution most folks design web sites for these days. Normally, I surf on a nice big wide screen at 1600x1024 - twice the horizontal screen space as many folks have.

Good web design dictates that things should look good, and function well at the lower 800x600 resolution. However, I'll admit to my laziness; I've been making lots of changes around here lately, and guess what - they look great on my monster monitor!

My observation at 800x600 - things looked like crap, and basic navigation was a pain, particularly after the latest round of menu additions that made the screen wider. I'm surprised more of you haven't been screaming louder. You're all just a polite group of folks, I guess...

Things should be better now for those of you with smaller monitors and/or lower resolutions. I've basically done two things:

- Removed the logo. Between it and the new menu items, there just wasn't enough horizontal space for everything to fit. I'm looking into ways to get it back.

- Downsized the home page photo.

Feel free to share your opinions, C-Brats. Nobody's gonna hurt my feelings...

OK - I think I've got everything back, with no messed up format for the small screen guys, and a logo in place to keep Mike from whining.

The main menu links are now stacked 3 high - the top row are the generic board links, the middle row are the C-Brat/C-Dory specific ones, and bringing up the bottom are profile/login links.

The screens are at least 10% wider than 800x600.
Actually, the screens are not any fixed width. They adjust to the size of your monitor resolution and browser window size, but scrolling is necessary unless you are at 800x600, with your browser window maximized.

With one exception, as Chuck just led me to discover...

The above is true if you are using the basic subSilver Board Style - the default when you sign up. If you have changed the Board Style in your profile to one with larger fonts (the Large, XLarge or XXLarge), scrolling will still be necessary if you are at 800x600. Chuck - you are using the XXLarge Board Style.

And there's really nothing I can do about that...the larger Board Style fonts were intended for folks with higher resolutions on the bigger monitors or LCD screens (1024x768+). At these higher resolutions, the default Board Style text can get really tiny - choosing a bigger Board Style helps with that, but since the screen resolution is higher, you don't end up with the scrolling problem when your browser window is maximized.

Da Nag,

Having problems getting around the site right now. Trying to get into photo albums or even into this reply page took several trys (5). Also unable to enlarge pictures in the albums. In all cases I'm getting the "can not display page" screen. Maybe your working on the site right now?

In regards to changes, I don't really care for the smaller picture on the home page. With luck, the Denebola :star will be shown there some day and I thought the bigger pic. would be cool :smiled. Also like seeing others boats with bigger detail.

The font is a bit smaller but is acceptable when I have my glasses on  . I do like not having to scroll port to starboard.

Keep up the great work :), Jon

Bill,

Help!!

Did someone change the page resolution? I have my monitor set at 800 x 600 and I now have to scroll sideways to see the whole screen.

Thanks,

Hey Larry,

That was me with the "Watched Topics" update - it widened the top a bit with the new link, and I forgot to check things at lower resoltutions.

Sorry, folks - I'll get things back to normal sometime today.
