well, it was a wonderful day out on the water today doing one of my favorite pasttimes, SHRIMPING
we were on the water at about 0600 and were ready to drop the first pot at 0700 when the 2010 season opened.

we dropped 4 pots and then we waited the 45 minutes agonizing over how slow the clock was ticking. Finaly it was time and we retrieved the first pot. up it came and low and behold, there were shrimp in that thar pot. we quickly emptied it out and reset it and went on to the next pot. once the 4 had been retrieved and reset we shut down and drifted while deheading and counting our catch. first set was good. 121 shrimp in the boat.
next set and we are at 251 shrimp. only 70 more for our limits.
last set of the day and we are over the limit. we putt over to a boat that is out there and ask how they are doing. they say that the pickings are poor. we then ask if they would like some, which they did not refuse.we gave them about 80 which was over our limit.

all in all , it was a very good day today. cannot wait for Wed. when we get to do it all over again.....lol......

susan and I did not do as well be we did not start until 12 noon. we made one set of three pots near hat island with 400 of our freinds and waited 2 hours before pulling. two pots were empty. we hit a mud spot on the bottom. shrimp like sand and rock not mud. the last pot netted 58 nice shrimp. Nice day on the water with no wind and after the rain had stopped. i will be out on wednesday again.

Ve measure the catch in gallons. A decent pull of my 4 pots will yield 3.5 to 4+ gallons of spot shrimps. Ve are eager to get out soon too.

You folks are very lucky! I just bought all the shrimp I could hold in the freezer at the local market. They are looking for prices to double in the next few weeks due to the oil spill in the gulf.

We started out at Possession Point at 0700. It may have been decent weather by noon, but at 0630 there were 4' steep wind waves with the ebbing tide. Made for some slow going and fun pot pulling. Boss-lady even got a little "out of sorts" from all the wave action.

Possession didn't produce much so we headed up to the Clinton ferry dock. Found our limits by 1300.

We're moored at the Everett Naval Station for the month of May. Nice place, fair price. But what they don't tell you is to ensure you check in with Everett Control prior to entering the harbor. Had a patrol boat complete with 50 cal come racing up to us as we got close. That'll tighten up the ol' helm seat spinchter.

Yep, you are to radio into them as you are departing their facility as well. Glad they didn't "lob a round" across your bow.

We'll be out on Wednesday. Probably start near Clinton, then maybe head towards Shipwreck. Heard some folks did well there on Saturday.

Yeah, Dave, I called before leaving the slip in the morning. Made coming back easier since they had me in the log.

 I checked the 10 Ave launch web-cam @ 0600 (I was working) and the lot was PACKED FULL already. I heard the wait was up to an hour to launch.

Perhaps a weekday would be more to my liking.

On saturday I did not launch until 11am and had the ramp all to my self. parking was a bit of a walk but a few early birds had alread pulled there boats and I had not problem finding a spot. slack was not until 1pm so no hurry to get there.

i will go early on wednesday, about 8am maybe, to avoid the crowds. Will head back to hat island area again. see you out there.

Darn, why does this thing called work always get in the way??

Caryn and I went shrimping on Saturday with a late start like Tom and Susan. I wanted to sleep in a bit and not deal with the hordes at 6:00am, plus for those who already know me, I'm "not a morning person" anyway.

We launched Barquinho at Shilshole after noon and got to our spot near Edmonds (Browns Bay) and dropped the pots around 1:00pm. After a 1 1/2 hour soak, give or take, the first pot, which was shallower yielded only 6 shrimp. :x However, the second deeper pot, yielded 26 shrimp for a total of 32! Good enough for a couple of meals, yum yum!

Checking others shrimpers post regarding their catch for opening day, it looks like those who put in the time, i.e. put their pots in early, limited out, no problem. I'm sure if we had the time to soak our pots and 2nd and 3rd time, we would have had the same rate of success. Oh well, you know what they say, "early birds get the worm."

I sure wish I didn't have to work on Wednesday, otherwise I'd be out there bright and early. Oh well, let's hope they add a couple of days, otherwise it'll be that old Brooklyn Dodgers refrain, "Wait'll next year!"

Hey Peter
you should be able to shrimp at Biz Point on Sat.
it looks like it will be open then. you have to watch the tides and current there but it can be very productive spot.

Ah, crap. Tom I would've taken you up on that offer...but I"m writing this from the front seat of my patrol car. :x This damn thing called work....

We went to South Lopez on the opener and got our 2 limits.

Going back up with my wife on our boat and friends on their boat this Friday and Saturday. First night on the boat for Kim, my wife. Anchoring overnight in Aleck Bay. Stop by and say hi if in the area.

Love shrimping the San Juans, with weather forecast this weekend to be great, it's a real treat.

See some of you at FHGT!

Well I headed out on Wednesday with my new friend Don. Don just bought the old My Heaven from Portland. he and his wife are kayakers and have never ran a power boat before so he tagged along to learn how. Spent a bit of time making passes at the dock for jetty island learnig how to dock. Don seemed to pick it up really fast.

We only got 60 shrimp or so but had a good day on the water going over what he needs to know to run his boat. Friday Susan and i are going to meet Don and his wife at Washington park with their boat and do a few hours of instruction. I know the blind leading the unknowing. Should be fun though.

last night warrens dog whined like he needed out. My dog uses the dog door but warrens dog is not use to it and a little scared of it.
so I get up at o300 in the morning and walk into the living room to let him out. while I do that the dam dog gets in to my bed.

Better hurry and get well, while you still have a dog to come back to
I picked up a good recipe for dog in the philippines while I was there and susan is not always watching me. :wink
