Hi Shawn and Marcy,
On our 2005 16' Cruiser we decided to go with the 40hp. We chose this engine because using the 40hp at higher rpms, we would eventually always reach that speed at which the dory hull would pound on the water. You'll know when that happens... Given that, it just didnt seem reasonable to pay the additional $$ for a larger hp engine when the power wasnt really going to be put to good use. I dont think we were ever really in a hurry, certainly not enough to warrant the hull pounding... but that is what draws people to C-Dory to begin with I think.
It's about the voyage, not just the destination.
As for honda versus suzuki... wow, that debate goes on here every day. There are many ongoing threads. Take the time and explore them. After you read them all, you will discover that it boils down to what you like best.
I chose the suzuki as it had a better warranty and there was plenty of juice to power our Raymarine depthsounder/gps, a Raymarine radio and the Raymarine C-70 display.
However, I'm taking delivery of a 22' Cruiser in a few weeks and decided upon Honda power for this boat. No particular reason for the change in manufacturer, as I have piece of mind in both.
Go with the 40hp... and select the engine based on warranty, and more importantly, locations of service facilities. Seems to me that there is more of a dealer network to support honda outboard service then suzuki (personal opinion). Some have even suggested that the humm or tone of the two are different.
Either way, both engines are great power plants and you will be happy with either one.
Happy boating,
Gary R.
