Replacing EZloader brakes

We have a 2002 EZloader trailer that came from the factory when we purchased the Mary Ellen. That was 11 years ago. This year I noticed we were losing brake fluid that ended up on the side of the boat after a tow home. I took everything apart and found the culprit. Brake cylinders that were leaking. I found that the hubs, bearings and spindles were fine. I got on line with EZloader and ordered new complete brake system assembled. I just finished last night with the assembly. I hooked up the boat this morning and tried out the new brakes. They work like brand new. I was very pleased with the parts from EZloader. They were shipped from Spokane in 2 days and the shipping was only $19.00. I had checked for anyone local to replace the brakes and no one works on boat trailers. It was an easy fix and for about $360.00, a good value.

Recently I added brake fluid to the surge unit, which was moist, but with no fluid, and adjusted the brakes. However, after driving an hour, the rear axle with the brakes had the hubs running at near 300 degrees, while the front hubs were at the usual 120 degrees or so. The brakes were not over tightened, but must have been dragging, even tho I didn't feel it when spinning the wheel by hand. I ended up backing the brakes all the way off again, and it ran much cooler coming home. While I haven't done it yet, my plans are to pull the surge brakes off and go electric. (I've run electric on all my past trailers, boat, utility and camper, and much happier with the electric set up. And no, it's not a problem in water, regardless what all the boat mechanic blogs say...at least in Fresh water...) Just feel it's better to have more control over the braking, as I'm pulling the CD-22 with a Highlander (set up for towing), plus it gets rid of that movement in the coupler! EZ loader has a conversion kit with the oil bath, but it's pricey. I'll probably just go back to the normal grease hubs. Anyone else made this conversion on the Ez Loader trailers? If so, any problems or advice? Thanks. Colby

Just finished up converting my trailer to electric brakes. Just bought some Dexter 10" electric brakes with the backing plate. Didn't even have to replace the Ez-Loader Reliable oil bath hubs, as those hubs/drums fit just fine with the Dexter brakes. I removed the old surge hydrualic brakes with the backing plate and the surge control unit coupler. All these items are in good shape. If anyone is interested, I'll sale the whole set for $50. (You pay the shipping.) Colby (Stoughton, WI)
