Recycling an older Toyota

Well, our trusty 92 Toyota corolla broke a differential gear tooth and the fix is more than the car is worth.

So, I sold the car to a young mechanic type for $100 and went to West Marine and bought a Standard Horizon handheld VHF
HX 280s. Nice basic radio, a new model this year.The VHF was $99.99 and I had a $15 boat show coupon.

I also bought Nigel Caulder's book: "How to read a Nautical Chart". I have been boating and been reading charts for a loong time, but I am learning new stuff on every page. It turns out that most charts (including digital charts) are not as accurate as our GPS units.

All in all, a good way to recycle the Toyota into something useful.

Yep, and when flying (controlled air space) the FAA says it doesn't care where you actually are, what counts is where THEY (their radar) think you are.
 
Larry, How many miles on the 92 Toyota?

I sold an 84 Tercel 4WD Wagon when it was 20 years old, had 508,000+ miles on it. It was still getting 30 MPG, but needed a throw-out bearing, clutch and brakes, and I was too far from my mechanic to go back and get that done or I would still be driving it. It is still running and being driven by my in-laws mail man.

As to charts and GPS. There is a neat "slide rule" guide thing, from Weems & Plath that has all the navigation symbols, and meanings on it. I saw it at the SBS and am thinking it might be a nice adjucnt to carry in the nav drawer.

The Toyota had 175,000 miles.

I have not completed my study of Nigel Caulders book, but is is a good text about how charts are made and how to interpret them.

The compact nav symbol guide sounds good for a C-Dory.
