Raymarine C80 E80 software upgrade

Raymarine released v3.16 of their C80 E80 software on 4/11/06. It can be found on their site.

Caveat:

In their never ending quest to ensure it remain a PIA to download, RayMarine now requires one become a "VIP" member. You will likely be required to re-register your product before being allowed to download the upgrade. That process requires s/n, date and place of purchase among other data. If you've already registered online at an earlier date, it makes no difference. :amgry

I jumped through their hoops and have the software (PC only, not MAC) for the C80. if you have problems with their registration feel free to email me privately and I'll send it via attachment. It's 5mb, so I hesitate to attach it here.

That's great that there is now Navtex support. I have been looking at the little furuno jobber that receives navtex text messages. Does anybody know what Navtex receivers this would work with?

I've heard that the newer Yamahas have NMEA/RS232 outputs and there've been rumors circulating about C-80/Yamaha experimentation going on. Nothing firm yet.

I wish Sea Wolf had a C80. Then we'd have a resident info source.

It just below one of the bar codes on the box that it is packed in. Mine (a C-70) starts with two letters. I have no idea where it is on the display itself. After taking the face panel off once and installing it again am reluctant to go throught that again to see if it is somewhere inside.

Well I got the upgrade files and loaded them on a LEXAR CF card but when I tried to put the LEXAR card in the C80 slot it would not seat. It would slide in but would not seat on the pins. Anyone else have this problem? I guess I have to find a SanDisk card.

Steve

Steve, a CF card is a CF card. If your Navionics card will seat so should the Lexar if it's properly oriented and inserted. Mine took PNY and a cheaper offbrand CF card.

With that said, even after seating the damn card I found it impossible for my C80 to accept anything written on anything but a 32mb or smaller Sandisk CF card. :x

I had v2.14 software and had to go through a separate series of hoops, starting with actually finding a 32 mb or smaller Sandisk CF card! :amgry Eventually I ended up finding one on Ebay then had to reformat it per RayMarine procedure before upgrading to v2.17 which supposedly allows the C80 to accept larger size CF cards.

Don't bother to call RayMarine tech support unless you do have a genuine Sandisk CF card either because they'll only insist you need one before going to the next step. Grrrrrr

My CF card is a 64 meg EPMemory brand that was on close-out at buy.com for $9.95, and it works just fine. So far I have transferred my 100+ PCWaypoint waypoints just fine, and also just finished updating the system software. The Raymarine update software, by the way, is buggy - if you push "Reboot" after the update completes without removing the CF card, the system just hangs - you get an error message, but neither the OK nor Cancel buttons do anything, and the system won't power off either! There is no onscreen prompt to remove the CF card, nor is there any text file containing instructions or anything. My solution was to shut the house power down, which worked. I know this is kind of like my Dad's way of turning his PC off, which was to yank the power cord out of the wall, because "Start" was such an illogical way to quit, and he never could quite master that, but when I repowered the house and turned the C-80 on, all was well. But this is just sloppy programming. If the same folks who did this are doing NavPlanner, I DON'T think you want to buy version 1.0...come to think of it, you don't want version 1.0 of darn near any software. Note the lack of smiley faces or other emoticons here.

Oops, forgot to include that little detail. It's in the genuwine upgrade instructions.

I have the C70, not yet installed but runnng in sim mode on my kitchen table powered by a Yaesu FP301 - just getting the hang of its operation. I did the upgrade successfully from a recycled Canon 32mb card that came with my camera. On the final prompt I hit reboot and the screen faded to black and I waited and waited and waited....... It appeared to have shut down. I repowered and the new software was installed and everything seems to be ok.

In beg forgiveness mode, oh "Best Nephew" I give you an undocumented C80, E80 feature. Capture the screen for posterity. Show everyone what your radar saw, or that big Orca flatus bubble on the fishfinder. Teach us what a salmon looks like on a C80 fishfinder.

REMOVE the Navionics card, insert a blank card. Press the DATA button for around 8 seconds until a BEEP occurs, then you let go the button and another beep tells you the screen has been saved to the CF card.

The first file is named dump001.bmp and so on. It is BMP, so fairly large around 990kB. Gleaned from a thread on TheHullTruth.

You know how hard it is to find a 16meg ScanDisk Compact Flash Card? Almost impossible! Smallest card I could find was 256meg and about $50. Finally found a Memorex brand 32meg card on sale for $16.99, with a guarantee that if it doesn't work I can return it. Today I tried my own 256meg Lexar card that I reformatted per Raymarine's instructions, but when I plugged it in and turned on the C80, it just booted normally without reading the card. Will try again tomorrow with this new Memorex card which is smaller and unformatted.

Mike, I feel your pain. :sad Fortunately they can be found on Ebay fairly cheap. The last upgrade fixed it so larger cards can be used but it too is spotty. Some work most don't. I updated today and it went well, though when it was done I pulled the card, hit reboot and it unexpectedly turned the C80 off. Hit power and it started up with the new software though.

Success!! Used the Memorex 32meg chip and it worked. Now if I can figure out if any of the changes are of benefit to me, I'll feel it was worth it.

Reading over the display manual online, it seems the best new deal is that the data panels can now be completly configured. All the info and more than you ever wanted.

Question about the set & drift data panel. How does the unit calculate this data. Does it look at the boat's heading vs. the cog to calculate drift? And how does it calculate the set or current speed? I notice you only get these readings when the sounder is on, because of it's paddle wheel speed indicator.

Has anyone priced adding the AIS transponder?

Well, I guess nobody is into the navigational mode with the C-80. Not a single answer to my questions about set & drift, and AIS on the C-80. There must be some nav mathematicians out there.

Steve,

I had tried a Lexar 256meg card and could not get it to work despite reformatting it the way Raymarine directed. Went out, and after much searching, found a $16.99 32meg card by Memorex. Just downloaded the two files without formatting the card, and it worked perfectly. The problem is, with prices of cards dropping dramatically, you just can't find any out there for less than 256megs and $50 or so. The total upgrade file is only about 5megs.

AIS is an automatic identification system that has been in use for commercial shipping for some time, that works like it does for air traffic controllers. Each ship has a transponder that gives vessel name, size, and other data, plus allows you to accurately track it's position. It's like a super MARPA system. Requires purchase of a receiver or a combo receiver/transponder. Probably alot more than any of us really need, but is really slick.
