Radar Question

I have noticed that there is a drain hole on the Radar base. The drain hole hasn't been punched out..should i drill or punch it out. Thanks Tug

Are you sure that is a drain hole? I have the same unit and I do not recall a hole or anything in the instructions as to open up any hole . The radome cover should be water tight I belive. Can't remember for sure but isn't there a seal between the base and cover?

The best advice I can give is to call the mfg's customer support. Don't guess, since if it's not a drain hole, and you make one, that's bad. Just call.

As an aside, on the JRC's I've had (one was labled Raymarine,) there is a relief valve for air pressure. When I lean on the dome, it bends and I can hear air going out. Since the dome rebounds, I assume there is air coming back in. No obvious drain hole. Remember there's electronics in there.

Furuno sent me a picture of the radar housing with the two vents circled but i can not post it? Whether the vents are air vents.( which i think they are ) . or water vents they didn't say. Tug

Tug-

I'll bet they are air vents for fresh air and humidity control. They are probably also placed to allow water condensation to escape out the bottom when it occurs on the inside of the dome.

Since the dome cannot reasonably be sealed, vents for pressure equalization, ventilation, and condensation escape would be necessary, IMHO.

Just my guess from a science viewpoint!

Joe..makes sense to me..except they are sealed tight...i tried to pass a very..very small diameter needle through where the hole should be..no chance...maybe the hole is there and only allow air to pass through after enough pressure builds up..
i am about to paint the bottom motor housing section of the Radar anyway...i will put a small piece of tape there just in case it's a functioning vent.

I was going to use an expensive exterior paint but a friend told me not to waste my money.....he just paints his with TrimClad....cheaper and lasts a long time...and easy to touch up.Tug
