Porthole

I am interested in installing port and stbd opening portholes in the v-berth. Having them both cracked open during the night should reduce condensation, yes? Less rain should get in if the weather changes overnight, unlike the forward hatch. I know several owners have installed portholes. Be great if you could share your experience with us.

My only comment is to go with a porthole that has a external metal sealing ring, aluminum or stainless.

They do make a nice addition.

I installed a pair of Lewmar standard aluminum port lights on my 22 about 6 years ago with no problems to date. The screens are pretty cheap but the port lights themselves are well made.

I got a couple of the Vetus PW21 ports recently. They seemed to have changed the part number so the older ones were on sale. I haven't installed them yet, but plan to do so soon.

Martin, I installed Vetus port lights last year and love them. They do help keep the cutty drier with cross ventilation unless its raining hard, then it becomes necessary to close them due to rain getting in. Its also nice to peek outside without getting out of bed. I also made plexi glass wind deflectors for the two slider windows to keep rain out at night with the windows cracked open.

We installed Vetus PM21 ports years ago and have never regretted the decision.

In our album is a how-to sub-album of the install procedure. I recommend using a Roto-Zip to cut out the fiberglass, BUT be sure to tape a garbage bag to the cabin truck IN the v-berth to contain the dust! We didn't! Ouch, what a mess!

Hi Nick,

Those look really nice. Were there any issues with the install related to the curve of the trunk wall? Could they be installed farther forward on the curve or would you run into trouble with fitting there?

Hi Harvey,

Credit for the planning goes to my buddy Rollie on C-Batical in MI who did the install on his boat first. The PM21's are the largest size that will fit and that is the only location where the curvature of the cabin trunk will allow an installation.

Thanks Nick. I had Port Lights on my Montgomery 15, and they were great. Brass, fit the curve and kept rain out and cabin dry. A nice addition.
