Wondering if any of you have mounted a set of planer board reels on the aft section of your roof on the 22' and if so, one on each side or a dual in center? If you have done this question #2 would be where did you mount the rod holders? I would like to run 3 rods off each port and starboard sides with big boards (32") :smilep Pictures of anything any of you have done would be awesome. :thup I am trying to rig my boat so I can be rigged up to really fish and then when the wife wants to go out for several day cruises, none of my fishing "stuff" as she call's it, is in the way. I have gimble mounted cannon unitrolls mounted on each side which are wonderful, :thup :thup :thup heck she doesn't even know I bought them last year!!!!!! :wink

You might consider in-line boards. They stow easily in a small tub. I've used both set-ups over the years and I actually prefer the in-lines. The only catch with them is that you need to run at least 17 lb. mono to keep the boards from breaking your line. You just need to splice in a leader if you'ld like smaller line at your bait. One big advantage to in-lines is the ability to keep your baits in the same position in your trolling spread. Set your farthest line 120' back, your middle at 100' and your inside @80'. Also your shallowest line should be the farthest (inboard deepest), In-lines will also troll better in rough water! Thanks for the info. I have a couple sets of Off Shore in line planer boards and they do work, but I find it's a chore to not lose a walleye or lake trout in the over 9 lb. range. I have fished off of others boats (non cdory) with the big boards and they appeal to me a bit more. Although if this is my only option I can live with it, just wondering what some of the group of c-dory owners have done in the past, it's a smart lot of folks on the c-brats, and I value all opionions received from this site. Thanks again.

I can't help you with the really big side planer rig you're working on, but for a side light for our other C-Brats here, I'll mention that Starcraftom turned me on to the Luhr-Jensen Side Planer to be used directly off a trolling rod to trol over "virgin" water not disturbed by the boat, which, of course, scatters the trout 25-25 feet to the side of the boat. Great for trolling around the shore from a boat further out in the lake, also!
It was developed to fish the other side of a river from shore, but works great to troll 50 to 100 feet out to the side of the boat directly off the rod.

Last year a friend gave me some Big off shore planner boards for large trout and salmon. I just rigged my down riggers in the up storage positions and hooked the Side planners right to them. It worked really good. With the booms extended and in the up positions the top of the boom was 6 ft off the water and that allowed me to run the planner boards over a two hundred ft from the boat. I did not catch anything but it worked really well.

May nor be much help for you but I mount my planer reels to the sides of the radar arch. Works well, easy reach from cockpit. I use the rod holders that I otherwise use for downrigger fishing, three aside and two in back. I don't use the big boards that much but the day may come when I have more time and seldom more than two lines aside. Some anglers stack three rod holders vertically, on the Dory they could go on each side of cabin wall, Just set the spacing so they don't interfere with each other. Another idea I experimented with is to run the line from the planer reel thru a ss ring then to a pulley on the forward railing. The planer reel is still on the arch but the line goes forward. I just attached the ring and pulley with cable ties in my experiment. It worked okay and did move the boards farther forward. If I fished for eyes more often I would buy genuine pulleys for this purpose and set it up more permanent.

It's funny you replied I was checking out pics of Not For Hire last week due to the fact that when I was searching for info, you came up on this subject several years ago and had some valuable input. Thanks for your input and I can visualize what your saying and am leaning towards the arch mounted board reels with 3 rod holder setups somewhere in the "C-dory" lettering area. That's if I don't just stick with my inlines, really trying to not clutter up (as my wife put's it) the boat. Thanks again.

The best running planner boards I have used are the double ones, they go out almost straight to the side.
Problem is they take up soooo much space in the boat.
A lot of fishermen on Lake Superior are going to the smaller in lines, myself included.
There are some newer releases that won't break your line out there now. There are pretty expensive though. I remember when we all used clothes pins!
