Hello:

I have two Honda 90's on my TomCat. The port outboard trim guage just stopped working and the needle just sits near the lowest position no matter the actual trim angle. I noticed that the needle does move up a little when the key is turned "on" but that is all. Anyone else ever have this problems? and is there a suggested remedy? Thanks, Steve AKA TWO-DAWGS.
 
Tried swapping the wiring to the other gage? This will rule out a bad gage if it works on the other motor.

Sounds like the signal switch is stuck. It's common. There is a small switch with a plastic finger that is between the motor mount and the motor housing. It is spring loaded to go up when the motor raises, and pushed down when lowered. A little salt or grunge in the finger pivot, and she stays down. Clean, lube and work free. That's my guess.
 
I've had a similar problem with my twin 40's - check to see if the ground wire is tight. I found that on mine the bolt that holds the ground wire to the motor is a bit long. When the engine's cold things worked fine but when it got hot - not so much. Amazingly, it worked fine for starting and raising and lowering the engines but not all the time for sending the tilt gauge signal....
 
Thanks Tyboo: The trim switch is the problem. The boat is in the water, so I can barely get to the switch - but was able to lift it to the "up" position and my gauge showed full up. Of course, when I lowered the motor to head out for the day, the switch stayed down again. Next time I pull the boat on its trailer, I will clean and lube and see how it goes.
