Might have found one but have concerns

1989 22ft Angler $22,000.00
One of my concerns is the hours on the motor and the price point
Is anybody familiar with the 70 Johnson’s?
I would think the motor is at its end or close but maybe I’m wrong?
I would definitely have it checked out!
Any thoughts?

Boat comes with:
1997 2 stroke 70HP Johnson outboard (2076 hrs)
2 stroke 15HP kicker
Furuno GPS/chart plotter
Separate fish/depth finder (old school)
New West Marine VHF radio
New Shakespeare Antenna
11 Square Crab Pots
Max Brutus Ace Line puller (big base)
2 18 gallon fuel tanks
5 gallon kicker tank
2 new batteries
2 electric canon down riggers (1 is mag 20)- big base
Wash down
Auto Pilot
1997 Pacific Trailer double axel disc brake trailer

Calculate the value of the boat anticipating a new engine, not worth 22k for that age of boat with an old engine. also what condition is the trailer, age of the electronics. You could easily be into 10K plus to repower, fix a trailer and buy new electronics.

The same year as my boat which had an '89 70 hp Johnson. These where great engines. Not sure how many hours mine had, I'm sure lots ! It was running well till it had a batch of evil fuel from a rusted out fuel filter ( my fault!). I'm sure carberator rebuild/cleaning would have revived it but it was still 30 years old so a new moor replaced it. Your candidate has a lot of hours- would need a through check by a good mechanic. Might serve to get you going though with the knowledge that a new motor would be needed in the near future.

Thanks for the info! He told me that he had an offer of 15K and turned it down but he is open to an offer. I’m going to kick the tires this weekend and see what condition the trailer is in and will definitely have the motor looked at - compression check- oil condition - corrosion etc.... if I think there’s a chance.
When I have to replace the motor I would probably want to re-power with a 90 which I believe is around 12k with cables and all?
So I have that in mind.
I’m hoping the boat and trailer is in good condition to make it worthwhile and I get a fishing day out of it regardless salmon is hot right now:thup

I bought my 1988 Cruiser w original Johnson 70 and unusable electronics for $18k in AK where everything costs more. I repowered w Honda 90 in 2012 for $11500 installed. Looking back now, it was a poor decision but it was a cheaper way to get in and the old motor ran fine. The difference betw that Johnson and the Honda was to say the least huge. I don't know about your area, but in my town there was no one who would or could repair an old Johnson. And if you don't have a kicker motor, your risk of being stranded without power running an ancient motor will keep you awake at night. I would be more patient and wait for a later year model with a low hours 4 stroke. They're out there.

I know of a nice one (1989 I think) that is for sale in
clear Lake...it has an almost new Honda 90...He is asking $23,500
If you will PM me I will give you the owners name , e-mail and phone number

Wow...That's way to inexpensive......it just has to be a misprint or a scam... I would think that boat would sell in the upper 30's or lower 40's.
Got your PM...will get to it in a few minutes..

That was a good motor in its day, and in fact the boat was designed around it. I have been down this road before, but with a 16' Angler. (Ended up with a new Honda BF 50, and around $8K underwater in boat valuation within months.) There will be a new motor in your future, no doubt. Does the lowest negotiable price of the boat as-is plus the estimated cost of a motor upgrade, plus the time/hassle cost of the repower make sense to you? If the overall number makes sense, then proceed, if not keep looking. Best wishes in your search.

Thanks westward ! I put his boat as equipt. at around 14 to 14.5 with a 11K motor upgrade to bring the boat up to 25K as long as everything else looks good but I’m going to check out the boat sea3po sent to me as well - seems promising..
Cheers

I’m looking into this boat with a re-power in mind for sure!!! I also think that I might be happier with a 22 Angler just for the added fishing room because that’s how I plan to use the boat... I’ve looked at a few 22’ Cruisers and it’s a little cramped in the stern.
