Look what I caught - a rare yellowtail off our coast

Nice fish!

Educate me; why so rare? Too cold up here?

Looks to be some sort of jack similiar to what I know as a "Kahala" or amberjack. I know fish have various names for the same species dependent on location (dolphin-fish is also a dorado is also a mahi-mahi etc). Trying to think if we (Hawai'i) have a yellow tailed jack. If so, I've never seen one. :?

Yep - it's basically a warmer water fish that is common farther south on the U.S. coast.

Yes - yellowtail amberjack - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowtail_amberjack - this would be the "california" subtype.
