Lewmar 700 bow roller

It seems that the Lewmar 700 is a popular windlass for the 22' Classics. Just purchased one and, according to the Fine Manual, the angle between the takeoff from the gypsy to the bow roller should be around 6 degrees - pretty flat. My current bow roller would create something like a 20-30 degree angle.

What type of roller / mount are you all using?

Edit: And another question - did you reinforce the deck under the windlass?

The flattish 6 degree angle is so the anchor will self-launch. A 20-30 degree upward angle will keep the anchor tilted backward with the center of gravity below the the bow roller's end height, hence, no launch.

I use a pivoting or drop nose style anchor roller that assures that the release of the chain tension drops the nose down and with it the anchor and it's center of gravity to start the downward movement of the anchor and rode. (See below.)

A non-pivoting anchor roller will also work, but the center of gravity of the anchor must be forward and low enough to move forward and pull the chain with it.

Each anchor and roller combination is different. Some will work, some won't. Experimentation is usually required. I know of one person that lowered the roller in the frame a bit to get it to work.

Getting all these anchor/windlass/self launch/ rode retrieval, rode storage/ etc. things to all work together is a bit of a Black Art.

On mine I had to drill new holes in the launcher arm to move it out 1.5 inches and change the balance point so it would tilt and self launch the anchor.
