Lake Mohave Cruise Feb 12-16

Let's revive the Lake Mohave Cruise this year. We use to do this in February and always had a great time. Lake Mohave is on the Colorado River below Lake Mead. It's about 50 miles long as I recall. Three landings...Katherine Landing on the south...Cottonwood Cove about in the middle...and Willow Beach on the north end. Northern half of the lake is Black Canyon...a beautiful cruise...eagles and herons...the occasional desert burro...almost guaranteed Bighorn viewing...Joel even had lunch with them one year. Fishing can be good...saw the biggest striper I've ever seen one year...50 pound range...they catch those at the back of the trout planting truck!
A great little weekend cruise. Say we plan on a BBQ at Cottonwood on Saturday night as in years past?

You're breaking my heart! I would buy/rent/steal a C-Dory to join you but will be in Carson City for the legislative session. Now 2010 is another story.

I just told Sue about going....and she said SURE !!! Now that she is retired she keeps me within arms reach....(or gunshot)
Roxie was interested...but I think she thought I was talking about food...

Alrighty then! Sounds like we have ourselves a gathering! Let's hope for good weather and the Quagga don't get us. Bring your cameras and binocs...those Bighorn are something to see.

Chris,Talked to Pat about making this gathering. She is up for it and checking today on getting the time off.  :D Weather permitting we'll be there. Can I use my California fishing license on Mohave? Where and when are you launching? We'll meet you. Need time and date.

Steve...great to have you along. Your California license won't work...Lake Mohave is actually between Nevada on the west and Arizona on the east. A license from one state or the other is needed...along with a use stamp from the state you don't have a license from.
I will launch at Katherine Landing...just outside Laughlin...I will be there early afternoon on Thursday the 12th.

Katherine Landing is actually almost due north of Laughlin...you head a little east of Laughlin and then turn north...it's only 6 or 7 miles to Katherine. Some folks may want to visit the casinos or buffets in Laughlin.

I'd like to stick my toe in on this one.
I don't think I can make all of it but would like to participate still.
The lake is not that big so I imagine I could find you somehow.

I have seen several Big Horn here myself, magnificent animals !!!!

Have to fix a cracked frame on my trailer but I can't imagine (hope) it will take that long....

Jeff

Wow ! Jeff ....Why don't you start a new thread on the cracked frame... I never heard of one cracking....but now that you have said it... I will go out and start looking.... Yesterday I waxed part of the boat...it was 85 here yesterday...nice...windy today..

Jeff...you should be able to find us...hail C-Dory's on channel 68...or 16...somebody will answer up.
Looks like you have a Pacific trailer...they have a plant here in Socal...in Chino. Very helpful bunch. If you don't have other resources for getting your trailer fixed...give them a call.

Thanks Chris,

Yes, I figured I could find you. If I make it I imagine it will be Saturday am or Friday late.

Joel, good idea (though as a former Marine I hate to admit a 'squid' is correct) and I will take some pics of the frame in case others may experience the same or have advice.

Chris, yes, have been to their shop, Pacific, and they were helpful, just trying to do it with the least amount of dinero as possible so I removed the cross member yesterday and will try to get it welded today.

Jeff

Hey Chris (and all),

Great idea. Heck, this may be THE YEAR I actually make it. Not positive yet, still checking my work and event calendar and crew availability.

My plan would be to arrive the 12th (Thurs) mid-afternoon at Katherine also, launch, then...what? Where do you plan to stay the first night in case I miss my arrival time, any particular cove in mind? I'd leave early Sunday for home.

Is it typical to use 2 anchors, 1 bow, 1 stern to shore in the sand; or, 3 anchors, 1 bow, 2 to shore? I do know, Chris, your boat tends to be in the opposite direction from the others in nearly every picture! (ha)

Bring firewood, or do you guys buy locally?

Now the real question: Why hasn't Roy and Lucky on Water Lillie joined in yet? This has to be their FAV spot of all time I believe.

Steve...don't know why we haven't heard from Roy and Lori...think I'll send them an email and see what's up.
As usual...no specific plan on where we will be when...but unless something keeps us at Katherine...I bet you will find us in Eighty Three Dollar Cove the first night....about mile 6.5 to port ascending.
Since I don't have those pesky trim tabs on my boat...I usually land stern to...and as Bill says...without even getting my feet wet...step on to the beach. I set the bow anchor off shore...let the rode pay out...back to the beach...shut down the motor and lift it...and let the boat coast to the beach. I then set an anchor on the beach...and take up on my bow rode until the boat is positioned just at the waterline. This lets me walk on and off the boat without any gymnastics. If the weather comes up...or at night...I usually go out on the hook.
Firewood would be a good idea. Not always much around on the beach.
Hope you can make it.

On another thread, we've wrestled a bit with whether our economy will undergo inflation or deflation. Chris just settled it. $83 to anchor in a cove??? As Charlie used to say, "Good Grief."

Thanks for the info Chris, sounds like I already have the right equipment, but DO have those "pesky" trim tabs which I'll gladly keep if it means getting my toes wet a couple times a day (ha)!

How's the fishing this time of year? Stripers? I'd think the cold water would make it pretty iffy to find a hungry one -- but then again, I don't have the expertise of Brent (Discovery) either...

Did we ever figure out which fishing license we need ? Not that I ever catch anything...but I kinda enjoy trying...

Steve... I only take one anchor.... and nose into the beach...Sue will be with us this year so I will need be a bit more careful... Rox never cared what I did as long as she could wear her party shirt and sit at the campfire. (funny dog)
