KATRINA CAT V: Prayers Please

Hey Gang! Well, KATRINA is now a catagory V... and may even hit New Orleans which itself is below sea level. Take a second and pause for all the folks evacuating their homes and the recovery workers who will be very busy no matter where this angry lady comes ashore. Take a look at history and nothing good happens when CAT Vs hit land.

Thank you for opening our eyes, Patrick. We're thinking of them, for sure. That has to be terribly frightening, even for those who may have grown used to these storms.

A look at CNN says that the mayor of New Orleans ordered "mandatory evacuation of residents". Does that mean of the whole city? Wow.

Patty here. We have been to New Orleans several times because we love it so. We were just sick to hear the news this morning. We are picturing our beloved Cafe DuMonde, the French Market, and everything else we enjoy so much possibly obliterated. We're definitely following this story and are hoping for a miracle.

Thanks for the heads up Patrick. My brother in law lives outside of Destin, Florida and I'm betting they will be busting out the plywood. I haven't been watching the news so didn't even realize how bad the situation was.

This could be an unprecedented storm. The storm surge could be 18-22 feet with a "local" surge to 28 feet! with "large and battering waves." Here is an update from the Weather Underground.

I'll be taking more than a minute thinking of all who will be affected by this storm. Let's hope Katrina dies down and fools all of the forcasters. But, if I were on the Louisiana or Alabama coast, I would be heading for the hills as fast as I could. Robbi

I've been thinking about Joe W., Peg and the vessel Betty Louise. If my old memory serves me right, they moved to New Orleans.

Thinking of and wishing every one well!

(When hurricaine Andrew hit Florida a few years ago, my mother-in-law had her mobile home leveled in Homestead, Florida and two of Carol's brothers had their homes in Homestead and Cutler Ridge, for the most part destroyed).

My buddy just bought a house in Petal MS last month. He's in North Carolina sweating bullets. Thankfully Petal is 75 miles from the Gulf, but it's on the wrong side of the track.

I understand the core is equivalent to an F3 tornado already.

I'll take quakes any day of the week.

Thanks to all. Going to the Marina now to help keep lines secure. We are way inland but things still get nasty...and we attempt to have one or two owners staying on the docks during these as to keep things secure. My turn. It really feels funny not going out to my locker in the garage to get my LBE (battle rattle) out and heading to the Lee County EMA. Last year's season, I was the AL National Guard's rep at the Lee County EMA and for 5 surrounding counties... I will miss the fancy gagets in the war room, but will be nice to just go take care of my boat and help other boaters.... and the uniform is much more comfortable...but, I will miss the HUMVEE and driver too... but the Excursion aint all bad either... and I do not have to stay inside on the phones and fax machines...moving soldiers and equipment... just play/....work with the boats.

ROBI: Neat little site there. I'll take my laptop with me to the docks.
Byrdman...off to FreeByrd and the Marina! Cheers! :beer :cigar

Hope all down there come through OK but I fear the worst! That place is so far below sea level in some spots, they keep pumps running all the time. I've got about 50 folks working at the shipyard in New Orleans (Avondale/Northrop Grumman), they have all left for the duration but their homes are another issue altogether.

We'll be watching the news and hoping for the best.

Charlie

Most of all Patrick, stay safe...I don't know if a marina is where I would want to be when this one hits...We're thinking about you, bud, and everyone down that way.

We're 50 miles North of N.O., and are not evacuating. Katrina is supposed to pass 20 miles East of us.

People are gridlocked comming out of the city. Many are broke down or are running out of gas on the roads.

The song birds have left around our house, leaving an erie, ominous silence.

We are in a remote area, and when the power goes out, we will be the last to be turned back on.

We've battened down the hatches, and done all we can to prepare. We have a 10k genny and lots of gas. The genny can run the A/C or the rest of the house if we switch on the different circuits so that we don't overload it's capacity.

We won't flood, but the CD is hitched up, and fueled. We are praying for protection from the wind, and would appreaciate your prayers.

Thanks,

Law

Law - You have our prayers. Your statement about the song birds was mighty powerful, and while I can still not imagine the feeling of dread you have, it does bring it a little closer.

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us, and please let us know as soon as you can that you and yours are safe.

Best wishes,

Mike

Thanks, Don and Mike. It's tough having to wait for this monster, knowing that we're going to have to ride it out.

They have evacuated the hospital where my wife works, so we'll be together for it.

I'll keep you all posted as long as the phone lines work.

Law

You are in out thoughts and prayers. I am eager to hear that you and your family are alright.
I appreciate you taking the time to help us understand what you are going through. I hope you have food, water and shelter for the duration of the storm and the days that follow.
