Increasing Wiper degree of sweep

It seemed like the degree of sweep on the 25 was not covering as much of the window as it could. Looking at the manual for the wipers I find that they are adjustable . 60-65-80-110 degrees. I pulled one of the motors.(Remove the wiper arm and 3/4" nut plus the other bolt and nyloc nut) On the back is a sticker that indicated that it was set to 80 degrees.

I removed the 6 screws and the back plate and changed the setting to 110. This involves removing three small screws and rotating a small metal disk so that the 110 is the chosen number.

Put it all back together and not the wiper rests against the rubber when in park and sweeps to with-in an inch or two of the other side when activated. Much better coverage. The second one only took about 10 minutes.

I know that C-dory puts the same motor and arm on all the boats now, so maybe the reason they use the 80 degree is so they only have to carry one motor. Probably the smaller boats don't have as large windshield glass.

I should also probably add that I upgraded the wiper arms themselves from the single spring loaded arm to the double articulated arm. The newer arm which is now installed on all C-Dorys, may have something to do with the sweep.

As a future C-Dory 25 owner (my boat is supposed to have left the factory Monday or Tuesday, for delivery to Cutter Marine) I had noticed the small coverage of the wiper blades while on a test ride and thought it was just something I would have to live with. Now thanks to you and other problem solvers on the web site, I am ready to make adjustments to my not yet received vessel.

reseting tyhe wiper blades?? you may need a real job but thank god you dont have one and can figure this stuff out for us. I will look at mine as soon as les lets me have it back.. cant wait to try the new kicker.
 
That new double arm style wiper is a pantographic set up. Instead of just swinging an arc, the double arm set up moves the blade back and forth on the window with the blade staying vertical and parallel with the two sides of the window, which gives much greater coverage than the traditional systems.

You see pantogrphic set ups on trucks, busses, motorhomes, and other vehicles with large windows.

The mechanical principle would seem to be one where the double arm is functionally a parallelogram, with one arm end doing the back and forth driving and the other arm providing a pivot point on the upper ends. The bottom ends and corners follow suit in forced parallel motion.

I'm assuming, therefore, that they require a different type of motor and leverage system as well as the double arm to achieve the parallel sweep motion, so that converting to them would require complete replacement of the wiper system on each window.

Does anyone know if you must replace the entire system as conjectured above or if a simple arm replacement with a new arm having an extra pivot point is possible?

Why would it surprise me that there would be someone on this site that would know this? Thanks Joe.

I got the wipers from the factory. They use the same 10 inch blade and also the same motor as I had already.

After you remove the old blade and arm and the 3/4" nut and rubber washer/washer cup that attaches the arm to the shaft you must either use an offset drill to drill the additional mounting hole (uses a #10 bolt and nilock nut) or do it from the inside. I removed the motor completely and used the bracket for a template from the inside and drilled the hole from there. The visor is in the way from the outside without an offset drill. The mounting bracket for the new arm is about 1" X 3" with the 3/4" hole in it that fits over the motor shaft and the 3/4 nut and washer goes back over that. There is an addition mounting hole (#10) that attaches through the fiberglass also.
As it turns out I needed to pull the motor anyway to re-adjust the sweep angle. Just make sure you mark the three wires and don't mix them up. One is black/ground and prett obvious. The other two are color coded so just note that.

There are three adjustments to make. One is how you mount the arm on the shaft and is where the "park" position will be against the rubber seal. Second is the length of the main arm. This is just a flip-out lever that allows you to slide the shaft in and out, just like the arm you have now. And the third is on the pantographic arm (can I call it that). That is a nut that you loosen slightly on the arm that allows that arm to slide in and out.

Wow, Pantographic! I didn't know I had such a fancy named wiper. And I have two. That makes it a Marine Bi-pantographic Wiper System or MBWS. Now I need to add an MWWS. Marine Window Washer System.

I don't know how much the factory charges because I was having trouble with my port wiper hardly ever keeping contact with the glass so they sent me a new pair.
