Ideas for back support extension on Tomcat dinette seat?

Has anyone extended the back support on the dinette seat closest to the stern? I think it would be easy enough to tack a piece of wood and add another cushion for more back support. I'm curious if anyone has done such a modification and how it was done.

Brent of Discovery did an extension on that aft backrest. I think there is a picture of it in his album.

Thanks for the tip. I checked his album but did not find that modification. I noticed he installed a cabinet between the front dinette seat and the forward berth. I'll shoot him a PM.

I bought a taller cushion at the factory party last year and am planning to cut a piece of plywood to fit inside. I'm going to try that, as I agree, it is uncomfortable as it comes from the factory (but looks good!)

Yes, this too was/is on my list. I took it a step further and fabricated a skeletal structure to raise the backrest cushion. Great structure, poor result, needs more thought. I raised it about 2" too high, so when in place it's actually less comfortable than originally! And, when I snap it in place at the higher location (it's movable), the snap straps on the rear of the cushion hang to support the cushion rather than supported by the top of the seat as before. So my best guess is to lower it 2" (easy) then fabricate some sort of lengthwise lower edge to support the bottom of the cushion.

Sorry, no pics, wasn't all that proud of the attempt, but I can post some if others don't want to repeat what I did. :sad
 
I don't recall the dimensions, but what about adding a board to the aft dinette seat and using the stern seat cushion for the padding? Of course if you had guests inside and out you would want both seats padded...but it may be a solution if you are all sitting in the same area.
 
Can't picture what you're saying Matt. Do you mean make the seat itself wider?

I was referring to the forward facing seat inside the cabin at the dinette with the short back support. It would be more comfortable to have a higher back support and I was exploring ways to do that.

Although it would be interesting to widen the seats and the dinette table to allow for a double berth....but I would likely do that with removable table/seat extensions.
 
Well, Matt, I'm knocking my head on the table here... trying to remember... but someone has posted pics of raising that aft dinette backrest on a TomCat... Maybe Dive Cat?

I was thinking about maybe putting a hinged wooden piece with vecro on both sides that would connect to the current cushion when both flipped up and down as it comes from the factory. Might need some fold out supports to rest on the cabinet top....


The boat is 200 miles away, so cannot tinker much without some planning.

Anxious to see what you C-Brats come up with... I just hope you don't post a pic of some miraculously welded stainless steel, home-built by a Da Vinci relative type of thing.... We need something simple!

Ha ha, I think I'M going to be worn out before I get it! It's brutal to be sans boat halfway through my season (April to November). This was a necessary evil for several reasons (all mine) but I'm also getting 2008 engines rigged when they arrive.

It's a great opportunity for me to research the modifications I want done and what to look for as well. I already have a box of goodies labeled "Napoleon" ready for delivery...

Ha ha, well my previous vessel was named "Divide and Conquer". I always thought it fitting to name a boat for it's (owner imposed) 'character'. I knew I would be using my boat pretty hard. I load up heavy with dive gear and head out to dive sites in a lot of conditions, day and night, etc. Over the years I thought of Napoleon I and his use of the Divide and Conquer tactic. (He did not invent it of course). The Tomcat is such a giant upgrade over my former boat the name Napoleon just seemed perfectly fitting to define it's character. Napleon was one of the great military generals and I think of the Tomcat as similarly great.

Somewhat unrelated, I plan to utilize some of the great trim ideas from other owners to complete the theme. I will have a Napoleon commemurative coin inside a teak helm insert and an antique map of the French Empire from 1811 (map printed in 1883 depicting France in 1811) placed under glass or plexi on the dinette.
 
Hi Folks,

Just a comment about boat designs.

You always wonder where the boat designers are coming from when you see a new boat with a seat without proper support on the back.

For years, when I was sailing, I would go to boat shows and see sailboats with a very shallow sinks in the galley. Anybody who has been sailing knows that a deep sink is needed to collect coffee cups and various other kitchenware and hold it why the boat is tacking, being reefed etc.

On the C-dory boats, the 22' C-dory has been basically designed by a user of boats. The other boats of the line I have questions. I think a basic is to have seats with good back support.
