Hey
I am having problems with my desktop puter.
I am typing this on my laptop on the wireless from my home service.
my desktop will not go online. my browser will not come up.
I use Verizon DSL and it is working fine for the laptop wireless.
on the task bar it say that it is trying to connect to.....(numbers)

I agree. Just unplug route for a minute or two and also turn off the PC. Then turn back on. Are you using wifi on your desktop? if yes, click the wirless icon in the system bar and select repair.

Roger – it your laptop works from your home service then your DSL modem is OK. Re-starting it will not help. If what you say “your browser will not come up” then you have other problems.

First lets test your internet connection.
Click on Start then Run.
In the Run window type ping 64.233.167.99 then click on OK.
If the next four lines start with Reply from - . You have a connection.
If they say Destination host unreachable, then you don’t have a connection.

Until we determing if you have a connection there is no point in guessing about a fix. There are too many variables.

I will be up till midnight tonight. If you want to you can call me at 360.273.7288 and I will talk you through some checks. I am leaving early tomorrow morning for the Cathlamet gathering. I will have my cell phone and if you want to, you can call me on it. 360.951.2814

Sure the router can connect to one PC but not another due to many reasons. A bad Ethernet or usb cable is fairly common problem. Resetting (total power down) permits router to self test itself and refresh the connections.

Another method is use the connected PC to access router control panel via its IP address then start with viewing the connections. Another common ailment is to check firewall settings on the non connected PC.

IME, the most common cause of this type of problem is a bad DHCP address. Cycling both forces a new session. It will be interesting to see what Roger reports back!

Hey all
Thanks for your suggestions from ya'll
My son started snooping around in the different files and accidentaly found that the fire wall had arbitrarily decided to block internet explorer from gaining access. (hmmmmm)
he did some modifying of the settings and all is well.
not sure why it decided to do that....lol....
