HP ratings

Jay, I agree, the HP increase, if only in the upper RPM's would be worthless to me too. I would like the increased HP to be able to run the OB's at a lower RPM for the same speed. Much of my cruising is at 4-67 knots, and the higher amp output would be nice as well.

Weight is the reason. twin 1 liter yamahas would be 500 lbs on the transom. That's too portly for a 22 IMO

You're right about service though. Down here on the Georgia coast, almost all I see are Yamaha outboards.

Never bought boat insurance, luckily never needed it; props, maybe a skeg but that's about it

And somebody mentioned the coast guard

Do they check for such things?

...recommended hp vs what's on the boat

Can't imagine marine patrol or coast guard even noticing a 115 on a 22

Like most boaters I dislike paying boat insurance. Shelling out a few hundred bucks every year and waving goodbye to it is no fun.
But here comes the BUT in capital letters. But what If someone were to hit me, I sure hope they have insurance. What if you cause an accident? Does not matter how experienced we are as boaters, it only takes a split second in lapse of concentration and an accident can happen. What if a person on another boat, or even on your boat was seriously injured and sued you for a couple of million. What then?

What's the normal amount of liability that they offer, certainly not two mil?

Wife wants to learn how to operate boat too, and she needs to
 
You are right Martin. I can't imagine anyone operating or transporting a larger boat like a C-Dory without properly being insured with full coverage. Gary.

Had multiple open fishermans since the 70s

Been lucky I suppose

Remember the first time I towed one across the seven mile bridge, the old bridge; wasn't but a few months after turning 16

But I promise to get insurance on this dory we're buying

Can't be too careful these days

So many more people on the road and in the water

Wow! Remember how much more it was when I had to increase my liability to two mil from one at work
 
Anyway, I like hearing that most of you don't think these boats need bigger motors

Because mine's only going to have a 75

and I'm trying real hard to even imagine a 22 foot boat with only a 75 :D

Thinking the new Yamahas, 40, 50 and 60 all weigh the same

Nope, just 50 and 60

Now I know why you all have 40s

Really nice having twin 40s I bet :D
