I did a search in the forums, but did not see anything really recent with respect to consumable parts for Honda outboards. So...

Thursday, I stopped at a dealer on the Oregon coast to buy oil filters for my Honda 90 and Honda 8, a Racor fuel filter, and a couple of cotter keys for the prop. I was stunned at the price. It was in the range of $50, plus or minus a few pennies. Did I get ripped off, or are they that expensive now. I don't recall them being that pricey in the past.

Does anyone have a reasonable online source for these consumable kinds of parts?

I don't know how the prices compare, but the online catalog is great and they always ship what I order. The last time I stocked up on the filters and drain plugs and plug gaskets so I haven't used the site in a couple years.

Looking at it today they have even more stuff on there. Like prices for new motors from several manufacturers. If I was to buy a new motor I would certainly by from a dealer and rigger I trusted, but if you ever wondered how much money it might cost, this is a neat reference.

I have bought the oil and fuel filters for my BF 45s just this march for 12.95 each. They were not listed online and I was discouraged at first. However, they are available.....West Marine's search feature is pretty pathetic... As you are well aware, the dealer is potentially a horrible place to buy anything.....

And I have bought them at NAPA too come to think of it. They were more expensive, but no shipping.....
 
That boats.net place has my OEM Honda oil filter for $6.32. I was trying to look up one for a BF45 but they don't seem to acknowledge that the motor exists. Weird. The Honda 90 oil filter is also $6.32.

If you enter the Honda OEM part number in the search box on boats.net it will bring it up if they sell the part. I'm betting the BF45 will take the same oil filter as the BF50 and BF40, but they get $12.78 for those. Wow. More than double the cost of the BF130. But, that's what you get for running them fancy-schmancy twins.

Thanks for the help...the Sierra number is 18-7911-1 for the bf 45. I finally got off my butt and looked at one of the ones I ordered this year. This time I got smarter through and bought 10 of them as I tire of paying shipping and handling.....Apparently it fits the new 20 hp Tohatsu I just bought too....How did I know???? Anyway, the point is the filters are out there in the aftermarket if one does some searching.

Tyboo, if I ever repower as the BF 45s have been flawless, it will be with a BF 115. Paying twice for extremely reliables engines may not have been a shining moment for me :)
 
OK, I just got through discussing doing your own work, so I might as well get through this.

First, I want good parts for Journey On, so buying Sierra, just-as-good, etc. is not an option.

Boat.net is a very good source for Honda (and other outboard) parts. As well as other Honda equipment. However, if you want just one filter, etc, shipping will offset the savings.

So, what I do is use Google to search the internet, using specific part numbers. Got some genuine Honda filters for a lot less than over the counter, but I had to buy 4 ea. Those came from e-bay, and I've had good luck with Amazon. Once in a while, I'll get free shipping with Amazon.

Racor filters are $22 on the internet, so I get several of them when I order other boating parts, in order to minimize the shipping.

To mention some price differences, the local Honda dealer charged ~$6 for a generator sparkplug. $3.50 at boat.net. Also, boat.net will look up the latest part dash number, the local dealer will sell you what's in their stock. And if boat.net has to order a part, you only pay the normal shipping, not the shipping to them AND the shipping to you.

Not sure how the local dealer is going to stay in business, but the internet is cheaper and gives better service on parts.

Sierra makes good replacement parts, but they are not Honda. In fact, the Honda filters are made by someone other than Honda. It looks as if your point is if Honda = good and everything else = not so good or even bad, then where does one get Honda gas? Also, where do I pick up some Honda electrons for my alternator? Of course, I am being redicuous, but I don't expect any answers to these questions as most of the time a response is based upon emotion.

But, I get there is nothing like peace of mind. And that is important, but it can be taken too far. I get you prefer Honda parts, but that doesn't mean after market ones are bad. In fact, they meet or exceed Honda OEM standards. If the aftermarked ones are bad, where does that leave Honda's OEM standards??? It seems like a tough question to answer.

BTW, I have no knock on Honda's parts as I think they are great. I just won't ding the aftermarket either as they're stuff is often very good too.

Last year I found oil filters at Wallys World for my Honda 200 but made by Mercury. THey specify usage on the Hondas. Much cheaper so I bought 6.
Wished that I could find the fuel filters for the 200 other than at AMD in Anchorage.
 
I have a yamaha f-115 (06) and I use yamaha parts because my engine is still under warranty . I use yamilube oil and lower unit oil also.I don't want any problems if there is a warranty issue .

When my eng is off warranty I will use mercury or other parts that cost less $ . My engine f-115 and mercury 75,90.and 115 have some of the same parts . Yamaha and mercury used to have a marketing and mfg. agreement . Most of the older 4stroke 50,75,90,115 and 225 mercury were actually Yamaha blocks with yamaha and mercury parts .
If one want to find out about OEM parts Google whatever engine you have and you will find many different parts stores example( yamaha outboard parts )
 
My 1997 Honda 90 hp. has a Mercury lower unit because Honda did not have a lower unit when they started making the 90 hp. Later on they did and then you could use either but the Mercury was cheaper.

I don't buy Honda gas either, but I do try to take care of the gas I do buy. The point I was trying to make was that other brands tend to be made in China. Now, Honda has a lot of parts made there and sometimes I have no other choice, but that motor doesn't need many parts and i try to do the best I can by it. Which now is reinforced (again) by doing my own work.

Honda didn't design a new motor for the 150, it's an 2.3 Accord stood on end. I'll bet that if you looked for an oil filter that fits that sized motor in a Honda car you'd find one. I've been using that kind of filter for years now. Just get a good one. Bosch is made in the USA for instance.

Another example: those spark plugs are Irridum and cost (boat price) $15 ea. Car price (same plug) is a lot less. And you're supposed to change them every few hundred hours, on a boat. In a car they last 100,000 miles.

Non- Honda parts for Honda 90 carb. version:

Oil Filters: NAPA GOLD 1334 (my choice); BOSCH 3312; or FRAM PH3593A (which I avoid at all costs).

Oil: Mobil 1 10w-30 synthetic, available most anywhere.

Plugs: DR7EA(NGK), available NAPA.

Fuel/water separator (depends on what came with the boat): Racor 53240 (10 micron gas) or R12S (2 micron diesel, which I prefer), either available at West Marine.

Lower Unit Lube: West Marine Synthetic.

I do my own work too and most of it is because I have 4 hours in just the transportation to take it to and from the dealer. With that time investment, I can do most of the stuff myself....Because of this, I get all of the benefits you pointed out by doing it myself too :)

And I do like the parts from the dealer better on many ocassions - whether it be my ford truck, or my honda 45. Sometimes though, it doesn't make too much sense to buy them. For example just the other day I replaced a sensor on my wife's little focus (poor thing has 190,000 miles on it) that controls the EGR. The dealer's said made in Mexico on it and wanted $280. At CarQuest, it was $52 and made in the USA. I don't know how this is possible, but whatever.....I'm not convinced the dealer's is any better or any worse. I was going to say we'll see, but I will fall over dead if I get 380,000 miles out of the $8000 car we bought new in 2000.

I've bought Wix brand filters for my Honda 50 from the local auto parts store for about 5 bucks. They also have crossovers for Racor filters as well. Try to find a Napa or Auto Value near you. You can also go to the Wix filters website and use their cross reference there.
