Happy Birthday Thor

Our tow vehicle Thor, a four cylinder Volvo 240 wagon, was purchased new by Dotty and me just twenty years ago this month. Rated to tow up to 3300 lbs and holding 71 cubic feet of stuff (not including us), it has served us flawlessly. Now mated to the twenty year old 16 foot Lizzie, we expect to drive it for the next five years and then hand it off to our grandaughter Lizzie.

Tack Thor!

Happy Birthday, Thor :gift You're looking great for 20! Of course, you're just a pup still :D

(I drive one of Thor's older brothers when not towing the 22.)

Hey Marty have you heard about that guy with the Volvo with something like 3 or 4 million miles on it? They are a well built car for sure. From a technicians viewpoint though they are a bit pesky to work on. :)

I actually find mine pretty agreeable to work on, mechanically. Plenty of room around the engine, fairly simple (compared to fancier cars), and a nice long run so there are plenty of parts and other people to consult with. On the other hand, the electrical system seems a bit pesky at times.

That said, I'm far from being a technician, and I don't even especially like working on cars, so I can't claim to come at it from that angle.

Here's a pic of Irv Gordon and his 1966
P1800. It now has well over two million miles and is heading for 3.

Sunbeam - maybe I should clarify, the reason I find them tricky to work on is I only get maybe a half dozen or so a year! If I worked on them every day they would probably seam simple. I remember in the early 80's thinking Honda's were hard to work on. Now after working on them daily since 1988 I can easily double my flat rate times without breaking a sweat. :D

Marty - thanks for the pic. One of my co-workers told me about the story he saw on the net but I never did look it up. As a technician I do have an appreciation for a well designed and built car - even if I do ocasionally call them names when I'm trying to figure out how they work or come apart!

Hey Marty, amidst all the exitment of Thor's birthday and talk about Volvo's I forgot that I own one as well. The 4.3MPI in my Stingray! :D Hopefully like Irv Gordon in another 45 years I'll be in the record books with 3 million miles on my boat!!

Regards, Rob

Hi Rob-Thanks for bringing this back to a boat related topic. By the way, I think Volvo of North America in Rockleigh, NJ is involved with the upkeep of Irv Gordon's P1800. At least they used to be.
