My current chartplotter, a Garmin 188 doesn't have the chip for the Chesapeake. I'm considering the Garmin 440 or 440s as a second unit. It includes coastal charts, and there is a current promotion for a $200 rebate with the purchase of the chartplotter and a G2 Vision card. A couple of questions:
Considering the rebate, is the G2 Vision chip that much better than the preloaded coastal chart?
Can I use the same transducer and antenna for both units?
Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

I believe the 440 has an integrated antenna. I think you need the 440S model if you want to use a sounder, and then you'd need a separate transducer, but I may be wrong on that.

You could buy the Chesapeake pre-programmed blue-Chart card for your 188, MFG Part# 010-C0020-00. Check EBay or Amazon, should be able to get for a little more than $100.

Fact is, I'm trying to leverage Father's Day into something more. A handheld was suggested, but I have trouble with a tiny screen, and the price of the 440 is about the same as the Colorado. I'm trying to figure out if the $200 rebate would warrant the addition of a g2 Vision card. . . but I still might end-up with a nose-hair clipper.

Good for ear hair also. I’m hoping for a gift certificate to my favorite fishing tackle joint, have the trimmer.

Our Garmin 176C seems to have crapped out, we are looking at a Garmin 440S as well. For Crabby Lou. It seems like the best deal going right now - thoughts?
 
I have the 440s and love it but the screen is small when you're on the move. I don't have the G2 vision card, so can't say much about it. If I had to do it over I would get the 540s instead.

The previous chartplotter on Levity was a Garmin 188C. I still have two chips for it. One is the Chesapeake the other is the ICW from Norfolk to Charleston. Email me if yo want to talk about acquiring these chips. My new unit is a Garmin 4210. The preloaded charts are good. The G2 does offer more detail, allows for satellite photo views (like Google Earth) and provides the option of a software created route. This last option saves the tedium of creating multiple legged routes with numerous waypoints. Of course, one is wise to review the proposed route before actually following it. IMO the software created routes bring the vessel too close to shallows and other dangers.

Chuck, I had a 188C on my 22 Cruiser and liked it very much. I have the newer Garmin 545S now and it's not as user friendly although as a backup to the E-80, it does fine. If I were you, I'd invest in both of Mike (Levity's) chips, since you live down on the ICW in NC, you'd have all you need!

Honestly, the Garmin 188C we had on the CD22 Daydream was a great chartplotter. I wish I still had a 188C and I would buy the Chesapeake and ICW chips! I still have the 110v power supply / computer data cable for transferring stuff from the Blue Chart CDs to a 188C, if anybody is interested in one of those.
 
Well, Patty just phoned me, and we now have a Garmin 440S for Crabby Lou! We found an internet price of $375 on this puppy, and West Marine almost matched it - they claimed their cost was $10 more, so they gave it to her for $385 - which, with our $10 West Marine coupon, got it back down to $375! So I will get 'er wired in either tonight (unlikely, Austin is graduating from high school) or early tomorrow morning (more likely - probably will be done before Patty gets up!).

We have an old transducer on Crabby Lou that feeds an antique fish finder. I wonder if it will work with the new 440S - anybody care to guess at the odds? If not, we can buy a new transducer eventually and stick with the antique for depth for a while longer...
