Fuel filter installation

I just purchased a Honda/Racor filter for my boat. I have a 95 Honda 90 and a 05 Honda 8 hp trolling motor which I would like to connect to this filter. I need to tee the outlet from the filter and should I put control valves on both outlets to the motors? What sort of tee and control valves would be appropriate for this application?

Every valve you put in is a potential leak. I'd put in a separate filter for each and just a Y from your main tank that leads to each. KISS Principle.

Or, alternatively, one filter and a Y after it to each engine. even more KISS

I assume that your Racor filter assy is (or equivalent to ) a Racor 120R-RAC-01. This unit should have at least 2 outlets, so that you don't need to use a tee, just plumb each fuel line to a separate port. Remember to plug any unused ports.

Journey On doesn't have a fuel shut off valve, and in general I haven't used one. However, if you want a shutoff valve, put it in the inlet port, and use a brass one. Either an Apollo brass ball valve or a Moeller valve are good (and cheap) choices.

Racor has an installation manual for the above filter: Racor120R-RAC-01 Installation They show several ways to plumb the unit, though I would not use as many valves as they show. A fuel shut off valve in an outboard system is primarily used as protection against siphoning.

Remember to change that filter element yearly, or it'll freeze to the bowl, as I've learned. Yes the Racor factory knows about it; no, they're not going to fix it.

I have the same set up you are asking about on my boat only with Yamaha motors. Both engines are plumbed into one filter mount. I was told to use an on/off valve between the kicker motor and the filter mount and to turn it to the off postion when I was running the main motor. Somthing about sucking the fuel from the kicker or such. But I always seem to forget and have never had a bit of trouble. I have used this set up on two boats over the course of twelve years nary a problem. No fuss, no muss
 
Unfortunately the Honda/Racor fuel filter ZW1-801AH has only one outlet port. That is why I would need to Y the outlet. I was also told that I should have valves after the Y to prevent back siphoning. As suggested by Spike maybe a valve on the kicker fuel line will suffice?

Rig it like Spike said. You can put a valve on kicker side if you want, but I never have on three different boats and never had a problem. Also coat "O" ring on cartridge with vasoline and it won't stick on you.
 
Thanks guys the excellent advice. I think I will put two anti-siphon hose barbs on the filter outlets and not bother with any valves. "KISS" Also I think the best place to mount the filter will be on the splash well where it is most accessible and I can monitor it easily. Thanks Nunya for the vasoline suggestion to prevent the filter cartridge from freezing up.

Yes, splash well is best as you'll have no vapors from any potential leak "inside" the boat!
