Fish box..????

HOW, pray tell, do you get your engines raised out of the water with that setup? We have a fishon holding our net on the back rail, and the big engine bumps it when we pull the motor up.
 
The Canyon fish bags are pretty cool. I had one on 2nd Byte but let it go with the boat when I sold it. I'm thinking about getting another one for 3rd Byte.

The bag I had stretched most of the way across the back of the cockpit. They have a strap on either end with a full length zipper along the top and I ran those straps down thru Scotty rod holder bases, and secured it with a dowels thru the straps. This made for a quick easy on and off. The bottom edge of the bag would just barely touch the floor. The bags are insulated and do a pretty darn good job of holding ice. they're tougher than a boot, and will hold a bunch of fish. They take up a minimum of cockpit space, that is, until you load it up with a couple hundred pounds of primo coho, in which case they do belly out a bit.

Currently I carry two coolers a large one in the back of the cockpit and a
smaller one in the cabin. Salmon go directly from the water into the big cooler. No mess in the cockpit. I have a fish cleaning table that mounts w/Scotty mounts on the side of the cockpit & drains over the side. When I'm through fishing I clean all the fish and the filets go directly into the small cooler w/shaved ice. Rinse the big cooler out over the side and
done. Halibut I put on a stringer tied off to a cleat until I'm ready to deal with them. Big halibut I just release to make more babies.
 
There's approx. one inch clearance between the motor and the fish box at full tilt. About making more of them, I used my boats splash well as the mold. So I'm pretty sure to get that custom fit you would want to use your own boat as it's mold. E-mail me and I will tell you the steps needed to build one or have one built. Brooks
 
I can vouch for the effectiveness of Marks rig on the former 2nd Byte. :D

It works great! I keep what you would call a medium sized cooler with ice drinks and lunch under the table or where ever, put a few fish in the bag then add some ice and repeat as necessary.

I was never a big fan of the bags in South Carolina when buddies used to use them for King Makerel, Dolphin, Wahoo and Tuna. They only used the bags to get the fish from the fish box to the weigh station, and I didn't see the point. They were always picky about the bags and it seemed like a part of the show more than a useful tool. So I don't know that I would have sprung for one if Mark and the guy in between hadn't been so kind as to let it go with the boat.

The Salmon I give a little love tap on the head, bleed them in the motor well and then transfer to the bag.

I am sort of amazed, Mark that you didn't get another one. If the one you gave me went away I'm sure I'd get another as it keeps the floor area usable.

I just wish you had put a Wallas on the boat instead of a windless!!!! :wink:

Hey Wade, I'm surprised I let the bag get away as well. Whatta' mistaka to maka. I am going to spring for another and this one stays!

As far as bleeding the fish are concerned. I erred and left out a step on how I handle my fish. They go directly into the cooler and from there immediately to a stringer tied to a cleat (have one on both sides posiitioned just forward of the cabin bulkhead) where they are immediately bled, after which they go back in the cooler.

Oh yeah, I didn't put the Wallas in the boat because I didn't want to make things toooo easy for you. You wouldn't like it anyway, too warm and comfortable. Might spoil your image.
 
Well, I picked up one of the Canyon fishbags this past spring, used it for the first time bottom fishing in late May and discovered there was a manufacturing defect (a 6" hole in the bottom by the water drain). They've been "replacing" it ever since...they told the dealer I bought it from they'd shipped it June 21...I recently emailed and asked just exactly WHERE it was shipped, as it surely hasn't arrived HERE! I pressed for a tracking number...got one, but there's no info about the wherebouts of the destination...just that it's enroute....If this doesn't get resolved soon, thinking we'll get our money back and go for a Reliable Fishingbag...some people over on ifish.net use those and are quite satisfied with them.
 
I sure don't have the problem with that many halibut........wish I did.
When we ordered our boat at the SBS last January Jeff(factory guy)talked me into the transom mount cooler. We are very happy with it. As far as fish goo, we had a raw water wash down built in, that works very well. Just spray the goo back to the bilg pump and its gone. I maybe overly optimistic as I purchased a insulated fish bag at Sportsco in Tacoma. So far this summer I haven't needed to get it slimy, all the fish fit in the cooler rather well.
 
As I mentioned earlier on this thread, I've used the Canyon fish baqs extensively and like them. Now, I have to acknowledge that that dog-on engineer, DogOnDory Dan has come up with a better mouse trap. The cooler
rack w/the 120 qt. Igloo cooler is near perfect. Clears the cockpit completely , ten seconds of less to deploy, maintains access to the bilge/drain/storage area between the fuel tanks, etc. It's great. By golly, I'm going to have to take back all those things I said about engineers.

All my fish get bled promptly and with the salmon they go directly to the cooler. The rig get rebaited and immediately back in the water. Then the salmon goes on one of the stringers which is attached to a cleat on either side of the gunwales, adjacent to the rear cabin bulkhead, where it is promptly bled in the water. After throroughly bled the salmon go back in the cooler. I have a cuttting board I can attach to the starboard gunwale (using Scotty mts) and I filet all my salmon either as I'm fishing or when done fishing and the filets go into a small cooler with shaved ice.
Makes for a nice clean boat and works good for me.

With halibut, I won't keep a big hen, preferring to let them keep making babies. Sixty #'ers are about as big as I want to keep (rule of thumb) and they are bled on a stringer before seeing the cockpit of the boat.
I usually just leave them on a stringer ('s) until I'm ready to pack up and run for the barn.

I have pulled a lot of mods on 3rd Byte this year, but Dan's cooler rack has to be one of my favorites.
