We recently completed a loop of the Erie / Oswego Canals - and went up through Lake Ontario / Thousand Islands. Great trip.
I had read about covering the fenders with burlap.. to protect from the sides, slime and wear of the locks.. and adapted some slicker/stronger pet food bags for the same purpose. Worked really well - and much less funky during te trip than burlap gets.
