Investigators determine skull found in crab pot is human

An anthropologist has confirmed a skull found in a crab pot off the Washington coast is human, and it is now being sent to the FBI crime lab at Quantico, Va.
Grays Harbor Undersheriff Dave Pimentel tells KIRO Radio investigators hope to identify it by extracting DNA.

The skull was found Friday morning in a crab pot just over 2 miles off Westport. The fisherman told investigators the pot had been set the previous week in about 90-100 feet of water.

"Sometime in the previous week the skull went into the crab pot and we're looking into it further. We don't know anything more than that at this point," Pimentel says.

The skull was sent to a lab in King County over the weekend, where it was determined it was human. Along with the DNA, investigators will be looking to see if there are any injuries sustained to the skull prior to death.

Any bets on the fact it is separated from the body could have something to do with that "cause of death" :twisted:

Or being 90 feet down in the Pacific Ocean :roll:

On the serious side, If they can ID that it is going to be pretty neat, and a plus for somebodies resume.

Lets see how this turns out.

It will be interesting. I immediately thought of all the stories of athletic shoes found floating between WA and BC....the ones that contained the remnants of human feet. Connection? Who knows. Lots of people go missing; some via criminal intent & some via mother nature & some we'll never know. At the least this may bring closure to some family. Don't know enough of the science involved but it does fascinate me, from an investigator's perspective.

The day after his wife disappeared in a kayaking accident, an Anchorage man answered his door to find two grim-faced Alaska state troopers.

"We’re sorry, Mr. Wilkens, but we have some information about your wife," said one trooper.

"Tell me! Did you find her?!" Wilkens shouted.

The troopers looked at each other. One said, "We have some bad news, some good news, and some really great news. Which do you want to hear first?"

Fearing the worst, an ashen Mr. Wilkens said, "Give me the bad news first."

The trooper said, "I’m sorry to tell you, sir, but this morning we found your wife’s body in Kachemak Bay."

"Oh, no!" exclaimed Wilkens. Swallowing hard, he asked, "What’s the good news?"

The trooper continued, "When we pulled her up, she had 12 twenty-five pound king crabs and 6 good-size Dungeness crabs clinging to her."

Stunned, Mr. Wilkens demanded, "If that’s the good news, what’s the great news?"

The trooper said, "We’re going to pull her up again tomorrow.

Skull in a crab pot? It boggles. A crab pot is not a very likely way to collect a skull. I bet if someone did some testing at depth, only a small percentage of skulls would get inside a pot. Makes you wonder how many other skulls are rolling around on the sands where crabs hang out. Two miles out is what, about 50 fathoms?

No. He was in 90-100' of water. Grays Harbor is very shallow for a long ways out.

Had not thought of that. Crabbers are demoniacally competitive. I suppose the skull could be a way to put somebody off. Seems extreme, though. Plus, gotta find a spare skull. Brrrr. Bad berries!

Interesting news item for sure. I bet between you and Meredith, and the stuff you both see and come across at work, you guys could come up w/ lots of 'interesting' stories!

The skull in the crab pot might give me pause in wondering what the crabs have been snacking on lately the next time I am dipping some tasty Dungeness crab in melted butter ... but god help me I will still enjoy it.
