I sent Peter (Jazzmaniac) two replies, but they are in my outbox, not my sent box...

Yes - messages remain in the outbox until read by the recipient and then they appear in your sent box.
 
I just received them Steve. I didn't check prior to this. It should show up as "sent" now.
