CRUMBLING HOSE

Quite by accident I found the factory supplied hose that drains the port lazarette-bait well was falling apart. Like most C-Dory 22s the compartment is just used for storage so's I never felt the need to inspect the hose. As the throughhull it is attached to is quite close to the waterline at rest this could have been a disaster.
I'd like to encourage everyone to inspect even unused hoses and clamps!

Yes, and especially hoses and through-hulls at or under the waterline, such as wash-down intakes or bait well water pickups!

In fact, since I don't use my bait well much, I think I'll plug the inake from the outside as well with a rubber stopper and some sealant.

It's always made me nervous, and is hidden down near the hull drain behind the bilge pumps, fuel tanks, batteries, etc.

It would make more sense to have the pump on the outside of the hull, if possible, like sitting on or attached to a plastic block between the motor(s) and the trim tabs, with the hose going up over the outside of the engine well, so the disaster waiting to happen wouldn't be set up, primed, and ready to sink the ship!

I had the thru hull for our raw water intake removed and glassed over the hole. I kept the pump where it was and added a length of hose with a strainer that I can throw over the side and still have a raw pickup, use for a shower when in fresh water, back up bilge pump or pump out another boat if I add extra hose on the pickup.

My two cents worth. It makes a better battery location than it does a bait well. Bore some holes in the bottom for ventilation, and get your house battery in there.
