Coho Killer?? What is this??

Okay, we were out in the boat today and heard a few people talking down by Tacoma on channel 68. What is a coho killer? Sounds like some kind of a spoon? Do you troll with it? How is it set up?

Jeff,
Your right it is a spoon. It is smaller than a Coyote spoon and is used on Coho and Chinook. It is fished behind a flasher with a leader length between 36" and 60". When the fish are feeding on the smaller bait they can productive.

As indicated above they can be trolled behind a flasher. I also have had good success with them just below the surface when the coho are thick at the west end of the strait. If you REALLY want to learn about CATCHING salmon, take a trip out to Sekiu or Neah Bay in August when the coho are there. 30-60 fish days (keep your 2-fish limit of hatcheries and release all the wilds) are common. Early in the season, the mark rate (hatchery/wild) is about 6-8:1. Later (near labor day), the mark rate is maybe 1:20. Your arms can go limp reeling in all those wild fish to catch a couple of legals but boy is it fun. Seeing the coho hit on a surface trolled lure is even more fun.

Wow! Thanks for the info Roger. That really sounds like it would be a good time. He may have to take one of those trips. Poor Jeff is trying to learn this stuff by trial and error. He did manage to catch one fish last year!!

Jeff if you are trolling the south sound right now the best advice i can give you ,for black mouth, is drag the bottom. People just do not get close enough to the bottom when trolling for blackmouth. let your down rigger balls hit the bottom. Thats were i set downriggers. as you move the wire will blow back a little and the will raise the ball off the bottom a little. do not look at your depth finder and go "oh its 150ft deep and i will go down 150ft" the blow back on the cables will raise your balls anywhere from 2ft ,at dead slow to 25ft at 2mph. so don't quess, let the balls bounce on the bottom and then work to keep then there. up down all day long.

Trolling isn't very easy in our boat right now. I think once we get a C-Dory we will definitely be more productive!!

if you cant troll then try mooching. i dont do it but it works really well for others. just use a mooching weight and a long leader with a two hook mooching set up. you can get these at any store. and jsut do the same only you will me drifting with the curret. the trick is to set up so the current will take you ovr the depth and area you want to work. sand bottom in 90 to 150 ft. and make sure you usse enough weight to dragg the bottom. black mouth are feeding on a type of bait that lives in and right on the sand .
