Bike Lane Enforcement

Apparently, according to other reports it was a set up even with a suitably outraged driver just to prove his point.

Does look like fun though. Can I have one of those new border patrol boats with 50 mm cannon for the next time some AH passes me at 25 kts in a trash can liner in the Swinomish canal ??? Please.......

Got to change the topic a little but what is the speed limit in the channel and what are the boundaries?
From the south their is a speed sign at latitude marina's haul out but I see tribal fishing boats going full speed until the bridge. So where is the line?

In the north end there are sign's on the homes in that short area but are they legal signs? just putting up a sign means nothing. The only real sign is at the railroad bridge. North of that its full speed ahead.

So what are the real limits.

Tom,

Good point. I'm not sure what is legal and what is not and I agree many of the signs are probably "private". Likewise many of the offenders are definitely "local". However the Sherrif was doodling slowly up the channel last Sunday morning and stopped just before the bridge and started taking notes of registration numbers in his little red book. Since I had followed him all the way (at NO wake speed) I just looked at him and he waved happily so I'm not too worried about it.

For me it's more an issue of common sense. Last week I got passed at the entrance to the narrow dog leg section by a boat doing at least 20 Kts who didn't even slow down for the two kayakers who were diddling around in the middle.

I have no problem with the sections at the top or bottom unless it happens to be really low water in which case the channel is narrow even for us. The bit in the middle where you have boats moored and even the section with houses and bulkheads is really no problem to do at no wake speed.

In fact if you catch the tide right and get 3 Kts going North you can do about 8 Kts  Do the inverse and you will be making about 2.

We stayed in the marina last Saturday night and had the educational experience of first nation singing and dancing all night until about 0615.
Actually it had less effect on my sleep than the hip-hop crap from a 40ft trash can on the dock at Bowmans the night before.

That should have thouroughly Hi-jacked this thread to the topic of "Pet Peeves"

As I read the part wondering whether the speed signs were legal I seemed to recall from the class for the mandatory safe boaters card in Oregon that speed rules applied whether posted or not. So I looked around and found this on the web. I would be surprised if WA wasn't the same.

Oregon - Speed Limits

In Oregon, it is unlawful to operate any motorboat or personal watercraft at greater than "no wake" speed (Maximum 5mph) when within 200 feet or less of docks, marinas, piers, moorages, boathouses, boat ramps, or people in the water. The above rule does not apply to commercial vessels or river navigation because in such instances more speed is needed to ensure a safe passage.

Additionally, PWCs must come to "no wake" speed when within 100 feet or less of vessels other than personal watercraft.

Good points.

Makes me wonder if you could consider the Swinomish as a river since on big tides like now it has 3 Kts+ of current.

common sense? that just the point I like a rule better then common sense when dealing with others. I have had boats yell at the for going to slow and going to fast all in the same spot. I once had a sail boat yell that he had the right. I was anchored.

As far as rules based on distance. Most people have no idea what a 100 or 1000 ft looks like on land or water. Its one of the better uses of a radar and gps, I know how far away I am for some thing.

two kayakers who were diddling around in the middle.

see the common sense, as well as self preservation, would tell you to not diddle around in the middle of a busy channel near a blind spot in a small hard to see unpowered boat. I love to kayak so we will get that out off the way now before the paddling mass .. well paddle me.. but I don't get in other peoples way if I can help it. I don't ride bikes on the street either and when on a motorcycle I assume everyone in a cage is part of the kill tom club. common sense and physics are the only rules of the road you really need.
