Beer Can Jet Engine Alcohol Stove

Cool! More in the "fun because you can do it? category, I suppose!

It's easy enough to get burned in that category without using fire, especially when it includes alcohol.

Pat, I didn't, but if you search "penny stove" or "hobo stove" on YouTube you'll see designs that do (for the simple beer-can). This actually came about because of a friend of mine showed me some of these stove designs that would barely have any flame at all and I was thinking, you know with my knowledge of jet engines I could probably make something that would knock his socks off in the flame department.
Succeeded in that.

As mentioned by TyBoo: I doubt seriously I'd light one of these off on a boat, and it's probably not a safe contraption in any environment but simply good knowledge to have if you ever needed it for emergency.

This beer can stove has a structural problem--LOL
First--- Aluminum has a very low strength factor when its beer can thin - then add heat and the tensile wall strength is reduced to zip.
Now load it up with a bowl of water and somebody has the potential to get burnt --all in all a hell of a bad idea--IMO

Good observation. If used, it should be simply for the flame and length of burning, below some solid pan holder.

I would hardly call it a jet engine. The thrust generated is probably too small to be measured. It will also only work with the can pointed up because most of the motive flow comes from the convection of the air due to the heat. The foam is not consumed because the alcohol does not actually burn, just the fumes. The alcohol also burns at a very low temperature which does not raise the temp of the foam high enough to combust.

I also think that the venturi effect is limited. There is also already a venturi at the top of the can due to the can taper.

Air is not compacted by a venturi. Basically the same volume of air is going through a smaller opening. This requires a particular mass of air to move faster to all get through the opening. This also causes a lowering of pressure. Putting the holes in the can in the neck of the venturi will draw outside air into the main stream.

Creasing the can to narrow it also greatly reduces its structural rigidity. You can stand on a straight empty drink can. Crease or bend the sides just a little and it will immediately collapse.

Turns out, it does have its uses beyond what I thought:

I've been using that design for a boonies retort for mercury for many years. Also a camper heater too. Amazing how important the inside edges being pointed up is as it sure accelerates the oxygen intake. You can regulate the flame height by less holes, great way to warm your camper/tent whatever longer BUT if it falls over what a firey mess. I put a rock/lead weight inside to hold and be more stable. Under the foam the lead doesn't even melt as below the flame. GREAT video Matt and I sure hope 2015 is a goodn' for you and Connie-respect-John

Flagold, you always get me into so much trouble...... heck I even bought an expensive Minelab metal detector to pick up all the nuggets like you do.... nah ! I think those were gold painted rocks and you faked it...cause all I found was a whole bunch of pull tabs and some ancient beer cans...still have not found a nugget.... and I live in big time gold country... only gold was what I gave the store to buy that thing......

Now, ya got me making hobo torches... what next ? Where do ya find all this stuff...
