Anybody know this C-Dory (Homer, AK)

I saw this add on craigslist:
http://anchorage.craigslist.org/boa/688192782.html

Are there any members living in Homer, AK that might know this boat?

I called the guy and he didn't seem to friendly and wasn't very receptive to me asking questions (what year motor, trailer, type of electronics, condition of cabin, etc.).

I don't know if the guy is just a good ol' salty Alaskan but would give you his Extra-Tuf's in stormy weather or if he was hiding something or if he didn't really want to sell...

BTW, answers as follows:
the motor is "newer";
the trailer is "about 5 years old";
the electronics are "a VHF radio, fish finder and gps";
the cabin is "fine";

I live in Juneau. Is it worth following up on this boat or should I wait for the next one to come along?

Thanks for your time everyone.

Hi Randy,

The only way to know if this is the boat for you is to bite the bullet, buy the ticket and fly up to Homer to check it out. The price sounds OK. You know you will be able to ferry it down to Juneau if you buy it.

I bought C-Farer the same way. I put down a $100 deposit, flew to Juneau to check it out and ferried it back to Haines. The guy I bought my boat from was more forthcoming. He willingly took more photos, gave me the ID numbers and took the time to look at the registration papers for the trailer and the boat to give more information. But not everyone is that talkative. The seller might not even be the original owner of the boat.

Are you ready to plunk down the $$ for the boat right now?

Pat

If you can go, GO! Check it out. He may think you are another lookie Loo,
not a serious buyer. The ad states 70 hours on the engine. (newer)
You'll be wondering if you let your boat float away.(IMHO)

Good luck,
JT :smiled

Thanks for all the replies.

Patrout - Yeah, I'd be willing to take the trip up there if I could get more info as well as more pictures. I thought I'd call again in a day or two and make sure I didn't catch him at a bad time. You know, the whole "benefit of the doubt" thing.

JT - "GO", says the man from Nevada :lol: It's not all that simple here in AK. I can either fly, take the ferry (3 days) or drive (2 days, if I'm lucky). That's why the more the info and better informed, the easier it is to commit to the trip. But I understand, I'd hate to see my boat float away too.

tpbrady - I'll ask when I call again.

cemiii - I thought the same thing. The back end sure looks awful flat to me.

I'll post up more info if I talk to the guy and have better luck.

Again, thanks,
-Randy

Sorry if you saw my earlier post, I thought you were asking about a different boat. Actually I glanced at this one too. It is an early 80's (I'm guessing 1984) Classic flat bottom. Engine looks good although I didn't hear it run. Everything else just looks "OK" not in horrible condition, but far from good. If the flat bottom version is acceptable to you it really isn't a bad deal the engine is probably worth 9K or so. Electronics were not in when I looked at it as it is sitting in a public place. There was also another one sitting next to it, same model he is asking 15K but had really old looking two strokes on it.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

the other give away on the classics are the small splashwell and transoms, take a quick comparison to my 87 angler rear end (album)

Hey Tim, There are 2 C-Dories at the entrance of the deep water launch. Maybe you could take your camera and snap a few photos for this guy. Hap
