9/21 Monterey Bay Albie try

Tried to sync a trip with Vern of Holoholo for Tues 9/22. He couldnt make it and the weather layed down enough for a Monday run..... 7'x11secs.

We launched from the Monterey CG ramp at 5:30 and went west once with hit the 36.32 line. Saw breezers at 32/35 and trolled a bit for nothing. Water temp there was 58 and water color wasnt right so we pressed on to the 122.55 line.

We hit 36.32/122.55 and began trolling. We trolled, and trolled, and trolled. Finally got a triple at 12:30. Lost one on the PB cedar plug but landed the other two. More trolling ensued, but thats all we got for the day and pulled the plug at 4pm. Decided to head to where we saw the breezers in the morning and found a sunfish (mola mola) in the area. Threw cut sardines at it and the spinning rod stuck. Big mistake here....we used the 1/2 oz jigheads I bought from walmart. For 20 mins, it was pure heaven.....dead weight at the end of the rod with an occasional burst of the drag running for 10-15 secs. This was the highlight of the day as the crew took turns fighting the fish. We were able to bring it up to the surface and probably was in the 50-60lbs class. It made a few more runs on the the surface and finally straighten out the hook. Down it went and all I could think was....what an ugly fish, glad it got off.

Per Vern and the reports, looks like they slayed the tuna on tues 15 miles south of where we were fishing.

Nam,

Thanks for the report and trying. It looks like the tuna were caught this past weekend out near the 123 x 15 line (50+), too far unless you have a fast rig and plan to go and come back in the dark.

I opted for halibut on live sardines on the beaches near Pt. Reyes and Bodega. Ended up with a 25, 14 & 12lbers.(http://www.flickr.com/photos/43091450@N08/?saved=1) Lots of fun. I just have to improve my live baitwell to keep my fish alive longer.
