2005 Suzuki DF-40 Temp and Rev light On at high RPM

Just took the boat out and cruised for an hour at low rpm. When I went to high rpm's I got a few beeps and then a Temp and Rev light. The engine throttled back to 3000 rpm's. I had a good stream of water coming out the "pee hole." Any idea what would cause this? I did a little research and think it could be a thermostat.
