16 Angler/Suzuki DF40 Prop

I have a Suzuki aluminum 3 blade 11 5/8 X 12 prop on my 40HP. It appears that the prop is way undersized and could use a more aggressive prop.
Does anyone with a 16' Angler running a 40HP Suzuki? If so, what prop are you using and how do you like it?
The folks that are running Hondas, what prop are you using? How do you like it?
I know I need to get another prop, just trying to not make a mistake. Not sure I want to go the ProPulse route but maybe.

Don't know if this will help you, but I have a 16' cruiser with a Honda 50 HP engine. I have a 3 blade 11.1 x 13 prop. The prop seems very good to me, although I don't have anything to compare it to. It is the only prop I have had. I have in the neighborhood of 1375 lbs on board and top end at 5400 RPM is 28 to 29 knots.
 
There is a definitive way to see if your prop is in the right range . That is the "full throttle trimmed out" test . Most 4 stroke motors have their horsepower rated at full throttle . That means at the top of the rated RPM range. In your case its 5800 RPM. If your motor turns 5800 or close to it at wide open throttle , trimmed out ,with a light to moderate load , you cant do any better . There is no guesswork involved . Also on a 40 or 50 H.P. motor the best you will get if you start tweaking with props is an extremly minimal,but expensive improvement . Give it a try . 4 strokes hate to be lugged..................

The boat will go to 6,000 @ WOT. It far from lugging and seems to not be working very hard. I know I need more prop just not sure how much.
 
I have nearly the same as Oldgrowth. But I think the diameter is 12. This is my second prop. I bent the blades on my original one a few weeks ago and had to buy a $300 replacement. They are nearly identical but 1" larger in diameter. I questioned the dealer where I bought it but he claimed all honda 50's come with that. I used to be able to go 29 at 6000. Now I go 28 at about 5750. Still okay, but not quite as snappy. I would welcome some further discussion about other types, styles, and materials of props for the 16 foot boats. I really resented paying $300 for the honda OEM.

That is probably the best choice from Suzuki . It a little bigger [.25"] diameter and and inch more pitch plus more cup and rake . Probably bring you down to 5600 or 5700 RPM , bite better [less slip] , and still get good hole shot [ not a term I normally apply to C Dorys, but what the hell !]
We also use alot of Powertech Props. www.ptprop.com The are very nice folks in Shreveport LA. and they have a myriad of choices in stainless props . They are also fairly reasonably priced . They also dispense free advice !

I just thought about another angle . If you have a good prop shop around , and if the hub is in good shape ,have them add cup to the prop and add an inch of pitch to it . That will make a big difference .

The prop is still good. Most of the shops in salem send their prop work to portland or seattle so I will take it to a local dealer or just drive up to portland in the near future and get it worked on. I will follow your advice. Thanks for the tips.
 
Wow! I looked at the on-line site for Powertech props. They are even slightly more than Honda OEM, but being stainless accounts for that. Props have really gotten pricey over the years.
