16 Angler Finally Hits the Water

Well it's been over a year since we bought our 1990 Angler, and finally today we took it out for the first time (I'll save the details of the core/ floor replacement for another day).

We launched at Edmonds, zipped across the sound to Kingston to walk around town for an hour, then took our time coming back. Didn't want to be too far from the launch in case of any issues with the 1990 Johnson which hadn't been run in a year and a half. But it ran great. On this first outing I also wanted to see if our short shaft 6hp dinghy motor would work as a kicker, and it does work perfectly, even with all of our weight forward while going over waves.

Might make it out once more for some crab before the season ends, then it's off to EQ for a new four stroke in a couple of weeks. Feels so good to be back on the water after an agonizing year of repairs!

Still can't figure out how to insert photos from my album into these messages like others do...

When you do get a chance, it would be interesting to read about.

Here's what you do:

1) If the image is already on the web somewhere, copy the image address, paste it in your post, highlight what you pasted in, and then go up above the posting box and click on "Img" - that will put image tags around the URL.

2) If the image is in your album (as the photo above), then start a post here, and then open your album as well (I usually do this in two tabs or windows). Find the image you want in your album, and click on it to open it (so you get the big image, not just the thumbnail). Then right click for image properties or location or address (same thing but different programs call it different names), copy that, paste it into the post box, highlight and do the image tags as above. Do one for each image.

Once you get it how you think you want it, hit "Preview" and see how it looks. If any images don't show up right in Preview, they won't post right either. So look for what it might be. I find that often the ending image tag gets orphaned on another line, so I fix that then Preview again. When all looks good, "Submit" and there you have it!

Looking forward to photos!

Wow! Congratulations on restoring that boat and on your maiden voyage across the sound. Nothing beats a 90's 16 footer with a brand new Honda, (although Pat Anderson swears his old Johnson on Crabby Lou will go forever) . Hope to see you on the water some day.

Yes, the new 4 strokes are like operating a new car: turn the key and go!

But the old OMC Johnson/Evinrudes, both the bigger two strokes (70-75 hp) with two cylinders and the 90-115 with four cylinders, run forever if taken care of reasonably.* They do, use quite a bit of gas, however, IMHO.

I traded my 1987 Evinrude 90 in on a new 2005 Yamaha 90 EFI 9 years ago, and the trade-in was immediately snatched up by a commercial fisherman in Bodega Bay. Probably still running today!

That 70 hp Evinrude Mike's going to trade in may have a lot of life left in it. Les or his mechanic at EQ could tell, of course. Might be a good inexpensive motor for someone who doesn't want to spend $6k or so on a new 4-Stroke.

* Some owners who are leery of the VRO (Variable Ratio Oil) Injection System, simply take it out and run straight 50:1 gas/oil mixture, and I believe Pat did. I never had any hint of a problem with it, so left it alone. YMMV.

Sunbeam - thanks so much for the photo tutorial! What I was trying was a hybrid between #1 and #2, but next time I will try doing only one way or the other.

Marty - I will be getting a new 4-stroke from Les, but it will not be a Honda. I may be letting a cat out of the bag here, but Les is no longer selling Hondas as of July 1. I'm very excited about the new outboard he will be installing, it will be one of their first, if not the first!

Sea Wolf- I agree, this old VRO Johnson 40 seems rock solid (the hour meter says 359). One of the main reasons for upgrading now is that it does not have power trim / tilt, and the manual assist tilt piston needs replacing (a $500 part) so it's not easy to raise/lower as is and I would really like to be able to do that from the helm anyway. And as you said, I'd really like better fuel mileage for cruising (although we didn't appear to use any fuel on our 12 mile outing yesterday).

Well could you let it the rest of the way out?

I'll be getting a new Tohatsu 50 hp 4-stroke. Didn't even know they existed until I asked Les for quote on a Honda. That's when I learned he decided to exclusively sell Tohatsu since the 60 hp and up are now made by Honda anyway, and apparently his customers pick the smaller Tohatsu kickers 9 times out of 10 over the Hondas anyway (due to lower cost). But the 4 stroke 50 is a brand new model built by Tohatsu, not Honda, so ours will be one of the first installed by EQ. From my personal experience dealing with Les along with the countless recommendations found here, I have complete confidence this will be a great match for the C-dory 16!

OK, we have a 1991 CD16 Angler (see pix under Crabby Lou), with a 1991 Johnson 2 stroke, but I disconnected the VRO and simply mix the oil and fuel in the tank. It does have a power tilt, which I need to get repaired! It runs magnificently, maybe not the most fuel efficient engine, but you can buy a LOT of gas for the cost of a new engine! It has started and run perfectly every time since we bought it in 2006, so we are not seeing any reason just yet to repower! In fact, we returned from Sucia to Bellingham two years ago in gale warning conditions, not the most comfortable ride, but the old Johnson never missed a beat - I trust that engine!

(P.S. This pic was BEFORE Patty and I lost massive amounts of weight in 2012!)
