I finally got around to installing and wiring a rode counter this weekend after solving my problem of the rode jumping off the gypsy of my Lewmar Pro Fish 700 windlass.
The counter is a surplus 12V resettable interval counter that I bought from Skycraft Surplus in Orlando, Florida ($11). The magnetic reed switch was a left over from installing an alarm system in my house several years ago ($2). The magnet is a very strong molybdenum disk magnet that I found on line for less than $.50. It is epoxied to the outside edge of the gypsy to stay out of the path of the rode.
Once I figured out how to mount the magnet and reed switch, it did not take long to test it. One revolution of the gypsy is about 9 inches so I have a scale factor but that will not be a problem.
I posted a few photos here http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_ ... php&page=2 and hope to add a simple schematic soon.
