$13 Rode Counter

I finally got around to installing and wiring a rode counter this weekend after solving my problem of the rode jumping off the gypsy of my Lewmar Pro Fish 700 windlass.

The counter is a surplus 12V resettable interval counter that I bought from Skycraft Surplus in Orlando, Florida ($11). The magnetic reed switch was a left over from installing an alarm system in my house several years ago ($2). The magnet is a very strong molybdenum disk magnet that I found on line for less than $.50. It is epoxied to the outside edge of the gypsy to stay out of the path of the rode.
Once I figured out how to mount the magnet and reed switch, it did not take long to test it. One revolution of the gypsy is about 9 inches so I have a scale factor but that will not be a problem.

I posted a few photos here http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_ ... php&page=2 and hope to add a simple schematic soon.

RichardW-

Nice job on the rode counter! And for only $13.50!

I'm like you, I love to figure out how to do things, then figure out how to do them for less, and when I'm done feel like I've won both battles!

Your Projects and Modifications sub albums are a wealth of clever ideas and engineering feats, and I'd recommend them highly to other C-Brats shopping for ideas.

I've never seen so much organization on a 22 foot boat!

Keep up the good work!

Joe. :teeth :thup

I see Richard is from Huntsville, AL. I'll bet he is one of those genius rocket scientists - part of the von Braun legacy - after viewing his album. Very impressive! Mortals should not attempt to do those things.
