08/12 - 08/14 - Powell River BC, Canadian CBGT

Well folks, my wife Anne and I have decided that we'd take on hosting a Canadian gathering of the C-Brats in Powell River BC this August. Probably the 2nd weekend but the exact date will have to confirmed yet.
For those yet to discover it, Powell River is located on the mainland of BC on the east side of the Salish Sea (Georgia Straight) across from Comox. There is no direct road access to Powell River, so it is accessed by ferry or a better yet use that wonderful C-Dory to check out a great new cruising area.
Powell River, population of about 13,000, has a nice marina, good stores for food provisioning, marine stores, golf course and it is about an hours cruise from Desolation Sound marine park, 5-6hrs to Princess Louisa marine park and, about 6-8 hours from the border, with lots of great anchoring or marina stops on the way if desired. Stop in at the Gulf Islands, Vancouver, Smuggler Cove, Pender Harbour or Jedidiah Island, just to mention a few.
August weather is usually calm and sunny. Come for the CBGT and stay to cruise some of these great areas either heading home or on your way up.
For BC and other Canadian C-Brats come visit a new area or return for a visit to Powell River to meet with C-Brat friends new and old.
Fishing has been good in our area in the last few years and August is a prime time for Chinook Salmon
Anne and I will let you know more details as they are confirmed and we will ask for a sign up page when the date is fixed.
Looking forward to seeing you.
Cheers
Ron and Anne

Ron,

It would be great to get to meet you and Anne and explore the area. I will be up in Desolation and Broughtons this summer, so depending on weather, dates and scheduling will try and get there. Still lots of planning to get done so will be watching for updates here.

Geoff and Aline,

There are some other C-Brats in your area. Maybe a bit of a recruiting, and put together a flotilla, or at least a buddy boat and watch the weather. I have done that from home (Sequim, WA) with folks who wanted to cross the Juan de Fuca Strait, going over to Friday Harbor gathering. Find someone from there who knows the area and local conditions and is used to making that crossing. It could be a fun trip.

Hi Geoff and Aline,

You can always putter up to Comox and cross over with us.

Martin and Andrea.
Hi Martin & Andrea

Thanks for the suggestion as a safer way to cross over the Strait in our 16' C-Dory. As a retired Mariner who has traveled the Strait many times in my first life--LOL. I know firsthand it can get nasty. But on the other hand, Aug. can also see it flat as a plate. So it a matter of a good weather forecast -or not- for me, where as you may risk it. So I will keep in mind your kind offer to cross together. I think its a 24 hour weather wind decision on our part.
Geoff & Aline on Blueback,

Sounds good Geoff. If at any other time you find yourself in the Comox area, give me a shout, we'll get together for a cold one.

Martin.

Geoff,
16's can make it no problem with an eye to the weather. At one of the first BC gatherings which was held in Desolation Sound in 2005, Catman Brock came in his 16 Angler. I think he is based in the Seattle area. He spent about a week cruising in Desolation and area.
Now if only we can get Marty to bring his 16 it will be a real successful event.
Cheers

Perhaps if you promise good pastrami and mustard at the gathering Marty will show.

If "Chowder Man" is going, you will have to be quick and get in the soup line up. You'll still find yourself standing behind Pat though

Martin.

From Powell River up to Princess Louisa could be a nice "after CBGT" addendum cruise. Sure hope this works out to fit into the summer cruising plans for a bunch of Brats.

Thanks Ron for your effort.

Hear Yea! Hear Yea! Hear Yea!
The date for the Powell River BC C-Brat Get Together, here after known as the PRCBGT has been set.
Set aside the dates of August, 12,13 and 14th to sip, sup and sight sea. To commune with nature, communicate with C-Brat friends and become one with the C-Dory force. (We are going to Star Wars tonight)
More details will be added in the coming weeks and months, but some possibilities include:
A golf tournament. (well mini golf actually!)
Fishing derby
Trail walks
Museum visit
Pot luck
Barbecued dinner
Boat naming ceremony. (hopefully the right reverend Pat will officiate)
Lots of social time
Perfect weather. (This area is called the Sunshine Coast of BC after all.)

OK that last one is just hoping, and may come true but some of the rest are guaranteed to be on the agenda. As I mentioned the details will be firmed up as we go along.

In the meantime Bill or Mike could you please add the PRCBGT to the list of officially sanctioned C-Brat events. Thank You.
Cheers
Ron & Anne

We can't get free in Idaho until Monday August 8th, and perhaps later, so no time to launch in Bellingham/ Blaine and spending a few days to boat up which was our plan before the gathering was announced. I am thinking of taking the Horseshoe -Langsdale ferry and launch at Garden Valley.

I just looked at the ferry fares - For truck & trailer length of 57 feet & 1 passenger it would be basic $53 + $6.90/foot over 20 feet or 37 feet x $6.90 = $250 + $16 passenger = about $320. Have I done that right? I assume that is round trip.

In any case, your on our radar and hope to be there.

Chuck,

Might try looking up the BC ferry and go up on the Vancouver Island side, and boat across. My Round trip (45 ft overall length), each way last summer was just at $110 CDN for the ride over from Tswassen to Nanaimo. Then drive up and launch in Comox for a straight across the strait, or Campbell River and hop-scotch down through some of the islands.

Just a thought, and hope to get to see you there.

Chuck,
Unfortunately you have the numbers for the ferry right. Fortunately I have negotiated with the Canadian government for a special deal for C-Brats that attend the PRCBGT. For this event they will take an American dollar and give $1.43 Canadian! Its a very special deal for the PRCBGT attendees from the US. That means the $320 cost would be reduced down to about $250 US. Still costly but much more palatable than $320 don't you think? And yes, if you launch at Garden Bay it would be for the round trip. And Garden Bay is about an hour or two from Powell River by C-Dory. And it gives you the opportunity to head up to Princess Louisa Inlet with Harvey on your return trip. Wow, that's a real no extra cost bonus of choosing to attend the PRCBGT. And C-Brats from Canada don't loose heart. I also have agreements in place from local businesses to take your dollars at par. Wow what a deal. Looking forward to seeing you in PR.
Cheers
Ron and Anne

Chuck and Ron,

I got sidetracked and forgot to mention in my last post that that $110 price was CDN and was on special days, for Vancouver Island tourism development. I believe it was Wed and Sat at special times. I don't know if that is limited to certain months or if that works year around. (And I didn't check it yet in 2016), but it is sure worth using that service on their schedule.
