Lowrance vs. Raymarine support and reliability

Time to add a chartplotter. I have an older unit that works fine for everything but responds very slowly with the latest Navionics charts. I'll keep it installed as a backup. I also want a unit that will show AIS targets from my VHF via NMEA 2000. I've narrowed the choices down to a Raymarine...

    Fuel filter/ water separator

Thanks for all the info. I didn't realize that the mount, filters and the bowl were so easily interchangeable.

    Fuel filter/ water separator

My new-to-me boat came with a big Racor-type (I think it's a copy-cat) primary filter/water separator. It looks like a Racor 320R-Rac-01, which is rated at 60 GPH. My Honda 90 shouldn't drink more than 10 GPH wide open. Anyway, I need to replace the plastic bowl, which fell off in the hot sun...

    Testing tachometer signal wire

To kcohen4: I'll take the gauges. I sent you a PM. Thanks! To Vic: Thanks for the thoughts on the tilt gauge and on the tach. It does sound like the tilt sender is stuck. The boat had not been in the water for 10 years when I bought it. I'll try your fix. If it's the gauge, it sounds...

    Testing tachometer signal wire

Thanks for the offer. I'll test both this weekend and let you know. It appears that the tilt gauge moves to the "nose down" setting when powered and stays there no matter what position the engine is in, so I may be in the market for both gauges. My engine is a 1997, so I'll need to check if...

    Testing tachometer signal wire

That's just what I need. I'll give it a test this weekend. As usual, thanks a bunch for a speedy and detailed reply.

    Testing tachometer signal wire

My tach shows zero RPM. Engine is a Honda BF90A, tach is a 7000 RPM Honda/Faria. The ground at the tach tests good, the positive at the tach tests good, and the engine shows good charging voltages when running. The dial on the back of the tach is set to "1" which should be correct for this...

Honda BF90 ring gear holder tool

The BF90A that I have is a 1600cc 4 cylinder, which was the basic guts of the 90's Accords. I don't even think they offered a V-6 in those days. I think as Accords evolved, the engine got bigger. Hopefully they still found an automotive use for the 1600, since, in my experience, it was just...

Honda BF90 ring gear holder tool

Followup: I just adapted the tool I had made to do this job on a car a few years ago (ironically a 1996 Accord--same engine as the BF90!). I had to drill some additional holes and buy some longer bolts at the hardware store, but it worked fine. I was happy that the bar I have on it is almost...

    Calculating prop pitch

Our new-to-us C-22 Cruiser with Honda 90 came with a 3-blade 13" aluminum prop. There's no markings on the prop as to pitch. It sounds like I would want a 15" pitch for this motor and this boat. Is there an accurate way to calculate the pitch? We haven't had the boat in the water yet, but...

    Yellowstone Lake--preferred anchor?

Thanks Jay. This helps a bunch.

Honda BF90 ring gear holder tool

Does anyone happen to have the ring gear holder tool for the Honda BF90 sitting around and want to sell it? The Honda part number is 07SPB-ZW10100, or 07WPB-ZW50100, which superseded it. This is the tool that you drop into the starter spot to lock the crankshaft for changing out the timing...

    Yellowstone Lake--preferred anchor?

Thanks for the info. Since it looks like can't get our C-22 to Juneau this year, we settled for spending the summer in Bridge Bay marina. We can get walk-up permits for the backcountry sites as they keep 1/3 of the sites for walk-ups. Thanks for the note on the weeds. I wasn't expecting...

    Yellowstone Lake--preferred anchor?

What works and what doesn't work on Yellowstone Lake? If the bottom is like much of the shoreline, it would be volcanic sand. I have a Bruce (claw) and a Danforth, and 2 rodes of 30 ft. chain and 300 ft. nylon.

    Whitecap products

Thanks for the info. I actually found the through-hulls I wanted at Groco's website. A lot of vendors don't sell direct, but Groco does. Problem solved.

    Whitecap products

Has anyone purchased Whitecap through-hulls or other Whitecap products? I'm relocating one bilge pump and adding another. Both will require 90 degree fittings. The only manufacturer that I can find that makes these is Whitecap. I could assemble a lot of plumbing pieces to accomplish the same...

    Stainless flatware or silverware

Thanks folks. I agree about the engine anodes. I learned long ago with a VW van: Priority #1: Take care of the stuff that can kill you. Priority #2: Take care of the stuff that can leave you stranded. Priority #3: Take care of the fun stuff and everything else. It sounds like rusty...

    Stainless flatware or silverware

Hey salt water people. Has anyone found flatware/silverware that is truly stainless? I know that lots of flatware labelled as stainless is 18/0 or some other cheap alloy that tends to rust anyway. I'm not into plastic. I see the same set sold at both West Marine and Defender. Defender says...

    Fuel tank vents

Hi Rob, That sounds like the solution then. Where did do buy your fillers?

    Fuel tank vents

I like the idea of eliminating the outside/topsides vent that could allow water in. I see that West Marine sells several of these. I understand the concept of a gas vent is that it allows air in as fuel is used, and allows air (and fumes) out when filling the tank or when the tank warms up...
