Lower Unit - 1998 Honda BF40 - Works Great, crack developing in housing

I will add that there was no grease leaking and no problems running the engine. The crack appears to not be into the grease/bearing cavity. I could do measurements/photos to confirm this.

Lower Unit - 1998 Honda BF40 - Works Great, crack developing in housing

Was working fine, but I saw the crack one day and decided to take it out of service since I go on long trips to remote places. It could possibly be repaired, or used for parts since everything else is working fine. Any idea what its worth? $300?

    Charging Dual Batteries

Yes, this raises the question, how/when does a charger know to stop charging. Does it just read the battery voltage and use that information? Or does a charged battery start to "push back" at some point (as you suggested, with the more-charged battery then sending juice to the less charged one)?

    Charging Dual Batteries

But here's what I don't understand. How do batteries get overcharged? For example, I'm running one day with the Perko switch set to "All" (as recommended while the engine is running). Then that night the engine is off, and I'm using the house battery and then the next morning it's somewhat...

    Charging Dual Batteries

Thanks for all the feedback! My batteries are the same age/size/type. What I've decided to do is charge each to full capacity independently (Perko OFF), then hook up the charger to them "both" (Perko set to ALL) while storing for the winter to keep them maintained. Sound good!?

    Kicker motor fuel set-up

Thanks Bob, that makes total sense! btw - what about the fuel gauge reading issue. Will it be incorrect? I don't know if my tank have sending units, or if all the fuel info comes from a flow rate sensor in the motor?

    Kicker motor fuel set-up

Any reason why I shouldn't run my Honda 9.9 off of the main fuel tanks for the main motor (Honda 2021 BF100A). Currently I have to run the kicker off a separate 6 gallon tank, and dump out un-used as at the end of each season. Could I tap into the 2nd port (unused) in the back of the water...

Looks like I need a shop manual just to do routine maintenance items. Anyone know where to get one!?

    New engine maintenance

Hi Steve, I'd be curious of your input on my above inquiry about the Gear Oil (see above).. Why is my 2021 BF100A specifying only GL-4, and then the Honda gear oil they sell is GL-4 & GL-5 (Honda part# 08739-90W). The internet is saying GL-4 is a specific type and not just "superceded" by GL-5...

    New engine maintenance

Yes, and my 2006 Honda outboard says GL-4 OR GL5. So it would seem that a 2021 specifying GL-4 would be for a reason.(?) the "internet" says GL-5 can be "corrosive to soft metals such as brass and bronze". There's no brass or bronze in there, but isn't the entire casing made of aluminum (soft...

    New engine maintenance

Yes, thanks.. It IS easy! Problem I've having is that the owners manual does not give a SPEC for the gear oil. 90W or 75W90? GL-4 or GL-5 (apparently GL-5 is bad for gearboxes with yellow metals in them)... Just not sure what to use!
