This was a favorite hangout for pirates hence the name Topsail. Merchants ships were warned to look out for the tops of sails behind the dunes. Blackbeards flag ship the Queen Anne's Revenge was found not far from here and is currently being salvaged after lying on the bottom for almost 300 years.
